USB Card reader trouble

I have a generic USB card reader that is having problems on one of my arch machines. My up-to-date desktop machine detects it perfectly and everything works. But the machine it is intended for is having issues.

This machine is also arch but it has a custom compiled kernel and is probably about 6 months out of date, maybe a little more. I am hoping it is just a missing kernel module or setting.

Here is what dmesg spits out over and over again while it is plugged in:

usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 17
usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi20 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 17
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-6: USB disconnect, address 17
usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 18
usb 1-4: device descriptor read/all, error -71
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 19
usb 1-4: device descriptor read/all, error -71
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 20
usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi21 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 20
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-4: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 20
usb 1-4: device firmware changed
usb 1-4: USB disconnect, address 20
scsi 21:0:0:0: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery
usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 21
usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi22 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 21
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-4: USB disconnect, address 21
usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22
usb 1-4: string descriptor 0 read error: -71
usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi23 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 22
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

Does anyone know what would cause this problem? I had already recompiled the kernel to add the "probe multiple LUNs" and the scsi generic support but I can't think of what else would be needed.

Thanks for any insight.

Re: USB Card reader trouble

Actually, in my case, it turned out to be another device causing the problem. It was either interference in the usb cable or the other device was causing this one not to work. Once that device was removed this card reader worked perfectly every time after.
