Can't control playback volume with amixer [SOLVED]

In an effort to ditch gnome3 I installed mpd and mplayer to replace rhythmbox and totem. I can play music fine, but changing the volume in amixer/alsamixer does not actually change the volume of the music. Sonata, an mpd client, states the following when trying to change volume: "[52@0] {setvol} problems setting volume"

This problem happens in mplayer, too, so I am hesitant to think that I configured mpd incorrectly. Any ideas of what I might have done wrong?

Here's the output of lsmod | grep snd

snd_seq_dummy 1455 0
snd_seq_oss 28052 0
snd_seq_midi_event 5332 1 snd_seq_oss

Thanks, Miche. I discovered that mplayer was configured to use oss and not alsa, so of course changing the volume with alsamixer didn't do anything.
