A strange monospace font on Conky, wikipedia/wikibooks, Shaman etc

I am running Arch Linux with openbox and bmpanel, and I am experiencing a strange problem with the fonts on my desktop. On certain websites and applications, I am seeing this odd monospace font, and in some cases, it has rendered these programs unusable. For example, Shaman package manager is using this font:
http://s397.photobucket.com/albums/pp57 … shaman.png

You can also see it on wikipedia:
http://s397.photobucket.com/albums/pp57 … ipedia.png

And conky:
http://s397.photobucket.com/albums/pp57 … ipedia.png

This might be simply a problem of a missing font, but I have no idea which font this is. I have tried installing and uninstalling GNOME (and all its dependancies), but to no avail.

Thanks in advance,
beachild

I really need a reply to this thread, if anyone needs more information, then just ask! This is rendering loads of programs I would use on a regular basis unusable. sad

In my system i have: ttf-ms-fonts, ttf-dejavu, ttf-bitstream-vera, ttf-cheapskate, artwiz-fonts and ttf-liberation.

You should try those...

Hi, i have no idea, perhaps you can find some hints in the Xorg font configuration.

Edit: try "Q. Mozilla and other programs can no longer access TrueType fonts on my system, and are reverting to ugly fonts instead" in the Fonts FAQ

pacman -Qs ttf will give you all the font's you've installed aside from xorg's dependencies.

I actually have a feeling you may not have any extra fonts installed and those programs are using the crappy fronts that come along with xorg.  I suggest ttf-dejavu.  It's just ttf-bitstream-vera with some extra unicode support.

Here's the output from sudo pacman -Qs ttf:

[bob@myhost ~]$ sudo pacman -Qs ttf
Password:
local/ttf-bitstream-vera 1.10-6
    Bitstream vera fonts
local/ttf-dejavu 2.28-1
Font family based on the Bitstream Vera Fonts with a wider range of
    characters
local/ttf-liberation 1.04-1
    Red Hats Liberation fonts
local/ttf-ms-fonts 2.0-2
    Core TTF Fonts from Microsoft

Hmm, i'll try reinstalling them, that might help

The fonts are working perfectly if I use them with openoffice, but when I'm on shaman or conky (i've been unable to replicate the firefox problem), they do not. I've installed them properly, it must be something else that's doing it.

Keep in mind I am as far from knowledgeable on things like this as possible, so I may be taking a shot in the dark, but does your /etc/X11/xorg.conf have something like this:

Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

In LXDE I got more or less similar issue. After setting the DPI every thing became ok. here is the options under device. note without NoDDC DPI won't work properly.

Section "Device"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
        ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
        ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz"
        ### [arg]: arg optional
        #Option "NoAccel" # [<bool>]
        #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ColorKey" # <i>
        #Option "CacheLines" # <i>
        #Option "Dac6Bit" # [<bool>]
        #Option "DRI" # [<bool>]
        #Option "NoDDC" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ShowCache" # [<bool>]
        #Option "XvMCSurfaces" # <i>
        #Option "PageFlip" # [<bool>]

Re: A strange monospace font on Conky, wikipedia/wikibooks, Shaman etc

I'm not sure if this is related or not, but I had the same font appearing a long time ago. (A couple of years.) Installing the "gsfonts" package fixed it for me.

When gnome is installed is it fine?

Re: A strange monospace font on Conky, wikipedia/wikibooks, Shaman etc

I know this is a really old thread, but I stumbled across this while looking for something else, and thought I would share what I found.

I had a similar problem where fonts that were installed and working in other places refused to be used in conky.  After a good bit of searching, I found I had to update my font cache.  You will need the fontconfig package, which is a dependency of most or all ttf fonts.

$ mkdir ~/.fonts
$ fc-cache -f -v

The site I found said to run fc-cache as root.  Don't do this, it wont work.  Also, idk why I had to create ~/.fonts first (mine is still empty...), but it wont build the cache right without it.

Running archlinux + fluxbox.
