Switch to Nvidia?

I consider to buy me a Zotac Nvidia gtx 550... how does Nvidia work on linux? Like ATI?
My machine runs with the oss-driver and it's horrible slow and there are lots of artifacts.
I tried also the proprietary driver. -> The results are better, but not acceptable.

Would the results be better if I switch to Nvidia?

My requirements are: games, full-hd-movies, 3d-programming, kde 4.6 with some eye-candies

(Please don't post any workarounds for the current problem. I just want some reviews/recensions for the relationship between linux and nvidia gtx-series)

Thanks! smile

Re: Switch to Nvidia?

Linux nvidia support is fantastic.  I highly recommend it.

Re: Switch to Nvidia?

Hell yes, go with nvidia. Mine is arriving tomorrow. It's a gts450, I didn't want to spend to much, a gtx550 would cost twice as much. It is also from Zotac though smile

Re: Switch to Nvidia?

xephinx,

I have had several nvidias on my desktop and all have had excellent support. Go ahead.

But I have a laptop with an ATI  Radeon HD 5730 and I wish I had never bought that one, not for Linux.

Re: Switch to Nvidia?

Alright thanks for your replies! smile

And are there any differences with the nvidia driver from the repository and the one from the official site?
I mean on the official nvidia site I can choose which driver is the right one for my card. In the repository there is only one (except the nvidia-173xx). Or am I misunderstanding something?

thanks again!

Get the nvidia driver from the repos.
As you can see it downloads the driver from nvidia. It's the same stuff only packaged for our distro.
