This may seem like a rant but I actually want to ask this question: Does cheese work well for anybody?
I thought because it was one of the very, very few actual webcam recorders with live preview and audio and being the default program for doing so in many, many distributions it should work well.
1) gstreamer automatic video output with fglrx seems to be xv, but it also happens with the sdl output. fglrx + cheese = very laggy video and the video overlaying all other windows:

I don't know whose fault it is, fglrx, xorg, cheese. But that doesn't look very trustworthy. All other video players I know don't produce this kind of error.
2) Ok, let's try to actually record a video.
I hit the record button. The preview freezes and cheese spams to console
(cheese:15383): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_mini_object_unref: assertion `GST_IS_MINI_OBJECT (mini_object)' failedOk, sometimes it seems to record fine and does that when I hit the stop recording button.
3) So, I cannot record. But maybe I can play around with the effects?
So I open the effects panel, and choose the "Edge" effect. Yes, you guessed it: Cheese segfaults.
Ok, let's look with gdb what kind of segfault it is.
#0 0x00007f288412c561 in strlen () from /lib/libc.so.6You are kidding me, right? In the year 2011 you segfault in strlen()? Really?
So yes, this is my question: I often see it in forums when people search for programs to record webcam video that cheese is recommended and besides cheese I don't find much that meets these three requirements: Record video, record audio, live preview.
But I can't really say how long cheese has been broken for me. That's because I can't really remember the last time it actually worked.
So is it just me?

I think it's probably the webcam driver mostly. Cheese is perfect on my eee, but a logitech webcam I own does what you describe. The one time I didn't look up driver compatibility for linux. http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/#supported
