Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

hmm, i wonder how many are using kernel26-ck-p4; i just checked, and i actually have a model 4, which means i should use prescott instead of pentium4 (sse3 instruction, i think)
Thanks for the repo graysky, its saved me probably a hundred hours of compiling...

Ah f*ck.  My bad.  I neglected to update the _kern variable in install.install from 2.6.38-ck to 2.6.39-ck.  I fixed it now in -5 and refreshed the repo.

Odd, I deleted the file and re-upped.  Please refresh (pacman -Syy) and try again.

@entio - try now...

$ md5sum /media/data/repo/x86_64/kernel26-ck-k8-headers-1:2.6.39.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz && md5sum kernel26-ck-k8-headers-1\:2.6.39.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

Does anyone know of an ftp client that will mirror a dirtree from a local disc to a sever with some sort of verification (file size/date)?  I currently use lftp but it obviously doesn't cut it.

lftp -c "set ftp:list-options -a;
open ftp://user:pw@server;
lcd /media/data/repo/
mirror -a -c -R --delete --verbose --parallel=1 --no-symlinks"

I am sorry graysky, still the same here. I started to think it has to do with the filtering sh*t the government in Turkey is trying to impose on us. Does the host happen to be hosting any kind of sexual or illegal sharing? Or is there a way that I can download the packages using a web browser and apply "pacman -U package"? Thanks for your efforts, by the way.

Edit: Nothing related to filtering I guess, https://publish.comcast.net/splash/ is just fine

Removing the comment in front of "XferCommand = /usr/bin/curl -C - -f %u > %o" in pacman.conf made it all perfect. Downloading right now.

edit: added "the comment in front of"

Glad to hear it.  For the record, my /etc/pacman.conf

$ grep Xfer /etc/pacman.conf
#XferCommand = /usr/bin/wget --passive-ftp -c -O %o %u
#XferCommand = /usr/bin/curl -C - -f %u > %o

Please post in this thread if you experience a problem in the future.  Thanks to toofish, I have the repodb.tar.gz/symlink problem fixed.  This -1 to -2 rebuild was the proof of concept.

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

Sorry I forgot to add a word in my last message(I actually removed the .comment, i.e. "#"). I wasn't actually using wget or curl, when the problem occurred. Then I gave them a try and curl did the job.

Finally, I'd like to add a word for kernel26-ck, please keep atom packages, if they are not going to be a burden for you. It's a pain to compile such big packages with this processor. Thank you very much for your help and the packages.

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

I feel like I am becoming an ass for you, I am sorry for that, but now I have another problem. I am trying to set bfq-ioschedular, but boot complains about bfq not being found(I/O scheduler bfq not found). I have installed kernel26-ck-atom and kernel26-ck-atom-headers, added bfq-iosched to mkinitcpio.conf's modules and used "mkinitcpio -p kernel26-ck"

here is my mkinitcpio.conf:

MODULES="i915 bfq-iosched"

and my /boot/grub/menu.lst:

title  Arch Linux
root   (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-label/Arch rootfstype=ext4 ro quiet splash i195.modeset=1 fastboot ipv6.disable=1 rootdelay=1 elevator=bfq init=/sbin/e4rat-preload
initrd /boot/kernel26.img

uname -a gives:

Linux archie 2.6.38-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 7 06:40:04 UTC 2011 i686 Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N450 @ 1.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Shouldn't it be something else? Am I really using kernel26-ck-atom?

Edit: I tried the modprobe way. Then I get this:

[sonay@archie ~]$ sudo modprobe bfq-iosched
Password:
FATAL: Module bfq_iosched not found.

You're booting into and running the ARCH kernel, no the CK kernel.

So how do I boot kernel26-ck-atom? I thought installing the package would replace vanilla kernel.

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

@sonay - nope, that isn't the ARCH way.  You'll need to manually make an entry in your menu.lst.  Based on your previous kernel26 entry I would think the following would work:

title Arch Linux, with Linux vmlinuz26-ck
root   (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26-ck root=/dev/disk/by-label/Arch rootfstype=ext4 ro quiet splash i195.modeset=1 fastboot ipv6.disable=1 rootdelay=1 elevator=bfq init=/sbin/e4rat-preload
initrd /boot/kernel26-ck.img

I actually don't think you need the rootfstype switch but I don't know for sure... I prefer to switch schedulers in my /etc/rc.local:

$ cat /etc/rc.local
#!/bin/bash

ifconfig eth0 mtu 4000 # set jumbo frames
echo noop > /sys/block/sdb/queue/scheduler # set scheduler for SSD
echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save        # suggestion from powertop
echo 11 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold # adjust ondemand threshold

echo 11 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold # adjust ondemand threshold

I just saw it on kernel-ck wiki smile I am also trying to reduce the boot time as far as I can. I thought maybe it is a module or something, better to load it at the start, right? (this might sound stupid, I am trying to learn Linux but I didn't find much documentation on the details, so I am experimenting). I'll clean that up. Thanks for your configuration, I'll try and report back. I am constantly reading wiki but I haven't seen a page about how to setup a kernel entry though I did myself a couple of times, when dual-booting with windows.

So I assume I already have the compressed image for kernel26-ck-atom and proceed.

OK, thanks a million again. Now I need to do the last step, I have a RTL8191SEvB wireless card and I am using an AUR package(rtl8192se-firmware) for that, will this package work? It doesn't now, but I mean if I recompile? There is also another package called rtl8192se-bfs, I doubt this has to do with kernel26-ck but not sure again. What should I do?

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

I would think you'd need to use this package, not the firmware package:  http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=34281

All you need to do is make sure you're booted into kernel26-ck, since the kernel version is defined by $(uname -r) in the PKGBUILD, it is critically important that you're booted into the kernel of interest. The -ck kernel PKGBUILD provides "kernel26" and "kerenl26-headers" so no need to modify anything else.

$ grep provides PKGBUILD
provides=("kernel26-ck=${pkgver}")
provides=("kernel26-ck-headers=${pkgver}" "kernel26-headers=${pkgver}")
