:: madwifi: requires kernel26<2.6.39

When I started pacman today, I got this error message:

:: Starting full system upgrade...
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: madwifi: requires kernel26<2.6.39

But when I check which kernel I have installed, it's 2.6.38.8-1...

So what's wrong?

madwifi was dropped. remove it and pacman -Syu

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I've the same problem, but with Ndiswrapper :S

But if I uninstall Ndiswrapper, will I have wifi connection?

Hmm, maybe it's time for a bug report?

Sorry for bumping but this info solves the ndiswrapper issue: http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 20609.html
And indeed it's gone: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50

OK, so question: what replaces ndiswrapper? Will I lose the capability to wrap windows drivers now?

You can still use it - it's in the AUR.

I followed these directions and ath0 no longer works.  I have lost wifi.  However after following your directions I DO have the most up to date arch installation.  It is, unfortunately, bittersweet.  How can I get wireless back without madwifi? Argh.

Sure you have to do that? There are really not many chips that doesn't have native drivers anymore.

@skralljt

What card do you have? (also note that with the in kernel drivers, the interface might be named something else than ath0)

Hmm I think wireless is just nuked.  At least ifconfig only returns eth0 and lo or whatever.  I forgot how to find if it is detected, tried lsmod | grep wifi but see now that it is grep net.  Such a pain walking back and forth up stairs to get networking again!

Re: :: madwifi: requires kernel26<2.6.39

I gave up on that HP TouchSmart and gave it Windows 7. With the TouchSmart, you fix a problem, then new problems appear (the dissappear, then reappear) constantly. I didn't have the time to manage someone else's laptop with those kinds of problems. If I ever get a laptop to use with Arch, it will not be an HP (they discontinued PCs and laptops!)!

Re: :: madwifi: requires kernel26<2.6.39

I don't remember what I did after wireless stopped working but I think I figured out that wireless drivers were already installed in the kernel and the interface had changed from ath0 to wlan0.  I moved in the midst of all this to a house with a wpa2 only hotspot and with great trepidation tried wicd which worked on the first try.  How about that?  linux worked on the first try!  (once.)
