Getting those "dots" as initrd.img loads

I am experimenting with some RAM-only initrd's, and the filesize for this dude is giant.  Not having those little "dots" draw across the screen (or some kind of progress bar for that matter) is a real thorn in my toe at this stage.  I have no idea what to Google for to get this visual feedback.  What do I do here?  GRUB option?  kernel or initrd option?

AFAIK, they are printed by internal script in initrd image. For, example, on gentoo genkernel images it is linuxrc. So, all you have to do is find any initrd image that "does dots", unpack it and check the initialization script.

@Coacher: I think synthead is asking for a progress meter for the loading of initramfs image into memory/RAM by the bootloader. What you mention is the time taken to boot the system using something like bootchart in the initramfs (after the initramfs execution starts).
