[NOT SOLVED] - still happening 1 in 3 boots...
Recent updates to udev 171-1 & kernel 2.6.38.7-1 seem to have resolved this for me.

I have udev 168-2 and the issue persists for me. Workarounds for me are either:
1) unplug my external USB drive (not ideal as I use it for back-up)
2) downgrade the number of cores I run from 4 to 3
3) downgrade to kernel 2.6.38.5-1Currently going with 3)
How can I dowgrade the number of running cores?

Recent updates to udev 171-1 & kernel 2.6.38.7-1 seem to have resolved this for me.
I'm using those package versions and still get the problem.
EDIT: I tried kernel 2.6.39 from [testing] and still have the problem. I think the issue is either not found yet (and in the kernel) or somewhere in udev.

I wonder if it is the same bug, since it seems resolved for some of us.
The kernel panic, at boot, when usb harddrive is getting detected - right before the init-scripts and daemons start.
Mine was fixed, as written earlier.

Does your kernel panics happen before the daemons kick in?
If not, it might be something else, what deamons are you starting at boot?
I only have: (syslog-ng network crond alsa).

Oh the absolute irony!
I just got back from another of these kernel panic boots, after trying to see (switch from alsa) if oss would detect my new p67 intel motherboard soundcard yet,
it did not, but that is another subject and thread.
The third boot, when returning things to alsa again (not related), i yet again got a kernel panic thanks to my usb-drive.
This time the init-part just got started, where it would mount filesystems and such from fstab, and then kernel paniced.
What i notice, is that the usb drive is not always "whirring up" from it's sleep state when i reboot.
I have already cursed the samsung drive since it has a hard-set sleep after about 15/20 seconds of inactivity, and it takes time for it to come back.
The feeling i get when a boot will fail, is that it does not "clunk, whirr and zzzzwroom" up when the bios posts the connected drives,
and that it is at such times that the kernel panic will happen later when booting arch.
Just as in the mailing list, i read and posted earlier in this thread, it is as if udev or something, does not wait just a millisecond more to be sure that the drives are ready.
But it still was earlier in the boot, before init , it happened before.
This now, is when the init system has started.

Hello, I have simillar problems:
Everthing is up, KDE4 etc... and often when I plug in my Voyager GT 16GB usb stick in usb slot, I have kernel panic, my keyboard starts flashing with all the leds and nothing responds. I have to do a hard reset. Also happens with a differend USDB hard drive.
Today i left usb in slot when kernel panic occured, I did a hard reset and during boot, after mounting filesystem, around cups(it doesn't have absolutly anything with cups) I have a kernel panic and my keyboard starts flashing and I have to hard reset.
This happens on kernel 2.6.38.x, when I downgrade to 2.6.37.x everything works... BUT when I downgrade to 2.6.37 my xorg, nvidia are lower version also, its a dependency...
I also upgraded to udev -171-1 and problem is still here...
That is happening on HP 8200 Elite desktop computer with i5-2600 CPU...

I am setting up server with:
Intel i5-2300
Gigabyte ga-q67m-d2h-b3
2 x 2GB Patriot DDR3
I can boot it only with acpi=off, I tried at first CentOS Linux, now I am trying on my favourite Arch Linux.
I get the same kernel panics as posted before, I tried already 2.6.38-ARCH, 2.6.39-1 from testing, 2.6.32-lts, 2.6.18 (stable kernel od CentOS).
Is there any significant BIOS switch I may have misconfigured? Or is there any way to boot with acpi?

Got kernel panic when plugged in my USB mp3 player. Got pretty much the same error which was on the screenshot in the first post.
Before that I had external HD plugged in without any problems.
Rebooted with both player and HD connected - no problems.
Happens very randomly... The same thing as with 2.6.38

Has anybody submitted a bug report on this problem ?
I encounter something quite similar when I'm playing DVDs. Sometimes (randomly), it leads to a kernel panic.
I have an AMD phenom II X4 processor and an ATI HD4670 graphic card.

I just googled and this bug comes up for various Linux distributions, such as Gentoo, and Ubuntu, with the same kernel versions. Most of the bug reports have not been resolved, although this one, http://bit.ly/lHI2Yx , for Gentoo, seems like a patch to correct the issue was applied to the 2.6.39 kernel in Gentoo, it claims to be fixed by one of the testers, but still seems unresolved for the bug reporter . I consider this bug a showstopper, as it risks not only unsaved work being lost, but also data corruption. In any case it urgently needs attention.

Thanks for this bug report. But I still wonder if it not related to udev more than the kernel ?
I've tried to downgrade the kernel and I still have random kernel panics when playing DVDs.

I think it would be udev also, since I've been on kernel-lts for a while now without this issue
Also, udev had a few strange issues come up recently (that got patched the day after I updated, but caused a bit of a panic when my RAID stopped showing up)

Tondu I'm glad you mentioned having this problem playing DVD's, because it reminded me I have had the same happen to me twice (although its very rare), simply loading a DVD into my internal IDE drive, during the 'mounting' phase, my system froze completely, kernel panic. So I don't think this kernel panic bug is isolated to just USB mounting.

Well, I don't think so. The problem was already here from the beginning of the 2.6.38 series (at least the random kernel panic when playing DVDs).

I got another kernel panic here.
Some strange thing made all partitions of my usb hard drive unmount (it's probably the bad cable).
Then I tried to plug the hd randomly in other usb ports and I got another kernel panic exactly after plug the cable in usb port.

Just to share my experience.
I have rebuilt the stock kernel (kernel.org) with localmodconfig options plus the options that https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 31#p947131 script gave me. Used -march=native, -mtune=native. No archlinux patches.
Checked 2.6.39.1, 2.6.39.2 - no problems with freezing no matter how many USB devices I connect/disconnect.
By the way, rebuilding the stock kernel with the config taken from 2.6.38-ARCH results in the same random freeze problems.

Thanks aya for your feedback. Seems that the freeze comes from a patch. According to badfish, the patch to scsi_sysfs.c seems to be responsible of the bug.
Aya, could you try to recompile your kernel with only this patch included ? Then, if it is crashing we are sure that everything comes from this file, and therefore we can submit a bug report about it.

Hmm... The problem is that as I mentioned, I did not apply any patches in both cases. Just using the default config from 2.6.38-ARCH gave me the random freeze issues with the stock kernel (no patches). I am not sure if the .config options change in this case because of the patches applied to the archlinux kernel. Maybe it was not right to use .config from the (patched) archlinux kernel when building the stock kernel without any patches.

Ok, so your opinion is that the crash comes from the configuration more than from the additional patch ?
According to badfish, 2.6.38.5 should work but 2.6.38.6 leads to some freeze. Which version did you try ?

It is the only thing I can think of for now. Since I did not use any patches at all, nor I see any need for them at the moment.
I tried 2.6.38.8-1 and 2.6.39.1-1 with the default arch .config and had these freezing problems. I am using my custom-built 2.6.39.2 since the day it appeared on kernel.org and there are no problems whatsoever. Maybe I will try arch .config with 2.6.39.2 to see if freezes are still there. I just hope my btrfs would not pass away during the experiments )
