Grub2 1.99rc1 and btrfs

Hi everybody,

I've got a little question about the current version of grub2-bios. I'd like to switch completely to btrfs on my laptop and use grub2 along with it (Yes I know it's still experimental and I know it could eat my hamster ^^). Now I have seen that within the /boot/grub directory there is a btrfs file and the fs.lst file also includes an btrfs entry.
However I could not find any hint about the current state of btrfs support and if it works not only with an rootfs using btrfs but also with no seperate /boot partition. So really everything will run on btrfs. I just came across old articles saying that it ain't ready yet.

I have installed Arch in qemu using btrfs but grub tells me it would be an unknown filesystem.

But I double checked and also with that installed version there is the btrfs entry in the fs.lst file. So does anyone know if grub2 will completely boot from btrfs and what do I have to take care of in order to make it work?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Grub2 1.99rc1 and btrfs

The btrfs.mod in grub2-bios (1.99~rc1 release version) has only btrfs detection support. Grub2 does not yet have booting capability from btrfs. You should wither try syslinux or grub2 bzr experimental branch for btrfs support http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=41055 (pkgname=grub2-bios-bzr-exp in the PKGBUILD).  Btrfs support is still a WIP so i recommend you to ask in #grub in freenode regarding its status.

Re: Grub2 1.99rc1 and btrfs

Btrfs support has been merged into bzr mainline so hopefully it will make into grub2 1.99 final release.

Re: Grub2 1.99rc1 and btrfs

grub2 1.99~rc2 supports btrfs root without separate /boot (but only uncompressed or zlib compression as of now) according to upstream.

Does grub2 rc2 support /boot on a snapshot?
