Its a trivial problem, just wondering if anyone encountered it before.
I installed the package "bb" from the aur, a old demo made more than 10 years ago to show off ascii-video processing of aalib.
The sound worked when i first installed the package, but only when no other application is playing sound.
I tried to run bb again a week later and i find the sound is broken. No drastic changes made to the system during that time.
On closer inspection, there is sound but only detectable when I press my ears against the speaker.
I tried to run X with nothing but bb, and the same thing occurs.
I guessing it is some incompatability issue with older sound systems.
Anyone else have sound problems with bb?

I'd say to start off by checking your volumes using alsamixer. Make sure you go through all available cards and options. Some of the time the names aren't very intuitive or descriptive as to what they actually control, thus experimentation may be necessary.

This post is dated, but this reply can help someone else.
BB demo uses OSS audio but your desktop environment can use Pulse Audio.
In this case you can install the package for ossp deamon, or follow these instructions:

Solved for me.
