[SOLVED] Every other character on tty1 is ignored after starting X

Hey all,

I have been a [very happy] arch user for about a year now, along with other distros, but this is a new issue to me.

My current configuration is using slim as a login manager for xfce4/openbox/gnome (bloated i know). The situation is that when I am sitting at the login prompt for slim, tty1 (ctrl+alt+F1) works fine, but as soon as i start X, every other key press is ignored, as in "ccoouurrttnneekk" reads "courtnek"

this issue is not present on tty2-6 and seemed to pop up shortly after I installed gnome. Does anyone have a clue as to what could be intercepting my key presses?

Thanks in advance

More info : this issue occurs no matter what WM I load, so it must be a lower level issue. Does anyone have suggestions on where to start toying with my configuration?

I can post any files from my system if anyone has an idea.

Compare ps output before and after running X?

Re: [SOLVED] Every other character on tty1 is ignored after starting X

for example, trying to login on tty1 would involve me typing "courtnek" but this comes out "cute"

this issue comes and goes randomly, sometimes in the middle of a word.

I had this once. I think it was a problem with hal or xorg.conf, I don't remember very well though...

(edit): I think I was also trying to use slim at the time, too, might be that.

Have you tried without Slim? I'm pretty sure I saw a fairly long thread running around somewhere saying that there was a bug in Slim specifically that caused strange things with tty1.

sure enough it works with gdm. I should have thought to try that...

I guess this solves the issue as far as arch is concerned. thanks everyone.

Ok but the bug already unsolved?
Because I would continue using slim

Not sure, does anyone have a link to a bug report on the issue?

EDIT: http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func= … up_id=2663

It looks like a patch was submitted in '09 for this, but the latest release (1.3.1) was compiled before that.

With the latest release so long ago, maybe it would be a good idea for us to build from their top of tree?

I'm still new to the whole arch way, so maybe some more experienced archers have some thoughts on the matter?

Re: [SOLVED] Every other character on tty1 is ignored after starting X

The latest release (as far as I can tell) was built in Jan 2010. I'm not able to reproduce this problem, but I'm wondering if it could be related to localization or a change in one of the GNOME packages (I don't use GNOME).  I'll see what I can find.

Re: [SOLVED] Every other character on tty1 is ignored after starting X

Sorry to bring up this old thread.
But, I am experiencing the same problem as OP. And I like SLIM as my log-in manager except this annoying bug.
Is there any solution without deleting SLIM?

Re: [SOLVED] Every other character on tty1 is ignored after starting X

I was part of the ancient threads.  The only thing I suggest is a simple word around.  Don't use tty1; rather use tty2 through tty6.
