I updated to the latest Nvidia driver, nvidia-275.09.07-1, nvidia-utils-275.09.07-1, lib32-nvidia-utils-275.09.07-1. After doing so I noticed a bug with gnome shell's status bar displaying it's icons, it seems on first boot the icons are all the same, reloading gnome shell forces the icons to not display correctly at all. I disabled all gnome shell extensions and rebooted with the same problem.
Finally, I downgraded all Nvidia packages above to, nvidia-270.41.19, and my icons once again display properly, so the latest driver is the cause.
Anyone else having this issue?
I included a snapshot, as an example of this bug,

Same here, I switches to nouveau because of this. Now even switching between X and Console works.

I've the same problem since last update of Nvidia drivers. We'll wait to the next update. It's a little annoying but it's ok with me.

Hehe i have the same "problem" thought it should be that way.

I have an issue with the latest nvidia too. i am not using gnome-shell (but am using gnome3)...
Firefox's auto-scrolling (which is nice with my tablet/Stylys) usually has a white icon appear with arrows, when i middle-click - but now instead, it doesn't display the icon properly, but instead it shows a black circle with a white cube. - it's such a minor issue, that i don't really care - but when i saw this thread - i thought i would post as this seems to not be only a gnome-shell problem.
however, firefox is the only application i have noticed this problem in - no other app has shown any similar issue.

Same problem. Lenovo S12 with Nvidia ION.

same on my system. thank you for sharing - downgrade solved the issue for now

funny how you guys prefer to downgrade to a even buggier version. at least with this new version you don't have corruption when changing to vt or after waking up from suspend
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

ymmv - no vt switching or suspend on my system is needed

I think that main disadvantage of noveau, is lack of vdpau support at this moment, so no flash and video processing offload.

...and nouveau is slower than Nvidia. it also is not nearly as feature complete

@triplesquarednine slower? gnome-shell runs faster on nouveau than on nvidia

if you read (both) comments i was replying to (ie: varg04444 asked the difference between drivers, then Juris commented on the lack of off-loading in nouveau) you would have seen that i was adding a comment to Juris' - on the difference between the nouveau and nvidia drivers - not gnome-shell exclusively.
gnome-shell/Mutter may be (currently) faster with nouveau (in many cases) - but that is where it ends. Often any speed you do get from nouveau - is at the cost of high CPU usage in comparison to nvidia which uses it's GPU, and very little cpu at all. when Nvidia fixes the issues, people will start to say that nouveau is slower under gnome-shell. they will get higher FPS with Nvidia, and apps/games will eat it up.
conclusion - Nvidia driver is technically faster than nouveau driver (considerably faster! - which is pretty much common knowledge). it just isn't as well supported in Gnome-Shell. however, that being said, some nvidia cards work fine with Gnome-Shell (i have a 9800GT on this machine). if i open 3d-type apps, 3d-modelling (realtime), games, etc with Nouveau - it blows chunks! -> in comparison to Nvidia (in gnome-shell, on my hardware).
this is also true of compiz and kwin compositors. nouveau is slower than nvidia (on all of my machines).

Still no luck with 275.19-1 version. Some guy from nvidia states that it should be fixed in 280.x

It is solved in 280.11-1 beta drivers.
The task in bug tracker dissappeared. The task is not closed, it doesn't exist.
