I recently noticed that some xfce-panel monitor applets were using an unreasonable amount of my cpu even when the computer is idle. I am using the latest nouveau drivers and kernel. I was wondering if anyone has any idea why this might be, and how I can fix it.

Thanks.
EDIT: I think i've narrowed down the problem as having something to do with the recent update to the gtk2 package, I've downgraded the package the the problem seems to be fixed. Besides ignoring the package, is there any other option?

My applets don't do this. But I have seen something similar before - these are applets that have a "status bar". Changing the gtk theme could help...

I had the exact same problem as OP, if I had xfce4-cpugraph-plugin in my taskbar, CPU usage will skyrocket for nothing. If I remove em, CPU usage goes to normal.
I changed my theme (thanks for the tip Cdh!) and now I can use xfce4-cpugraph-plugin again! So definatly something goes wonky in new GTK upgrade...

I'm having the same problem. Maybe this bug should be reported?

I had similar problems with chromium.
Seems to be fixed now in gtk2 2.24.5-2.
