I use xfce with networkmanager. I have to use the latter since I use mobile broadband. the nm-applet was however the only app I use that used gtk3 and it stood out like an eyesore. So I went into abs and added --with-gtkver=2 to the PKGBUILD to compile it with gtk2 instead. Now I am wondering if it is possible to perhaps create a package stripped of all unnecessary dependencies to gnome for those of us who still live in gtk2, whether through xfce, openbox, etc. I am not

same here. nm-applet remains the only gtk3 application in my KDE4 system.

Although I have no idea on how much extent those can be tampered with, I would love to see a GTK2 based NM-Applet back on my system, and I'm sure many others would to.
I'm kind of confused as to why they changed it to GTK3 anyway. It worked perfectly fine with GTK2, and it themed better. Additionally there is no reason It couldn't have been given a GTK2 fallback mode if you were running it outside of gnome.
Genius may have its limitations, but stupidity is not thus handicapped.

Nimbus - you can use that PKGBUILD if you are just interested in a gtk2 applet.
I started this thread in the hope that maybe a pkgbuild could be developed for an nm-applet even more tailored to non-gnome systems.
I am no expert, but I don't think it can fallback to gtk2. You have to compile it with either or.

So, i was looking into something like this, actually for me this is the only thing that depends on gconf on my xfce system and i have to say that i hate it.
Any progress in finding a way to build a minimal or more striped package of this?
I'm looking into the sources to see if i find what exactly depends on this stuff and if there are any cool switch to put in the .configure, but this is hard for the lack of usefull documentation -.-'
