Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Hello everyone.
I've made a GNOME2 fork. I've called it "Mate".
My english is not so good. And so, maybe I can not give support in English.
Correct me if I'm wrong. Any suggestion is welcome.

...sorry about short description.

MATE Desktop Environment, a non-intuitive and unattractive desktop for users, using traditional computing desktop metaphor. Also known as the GNOME2 fork.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I see that you have set up a repo too:

[mate]
# Contains official mate desktop packages
Server = http://matsusoft.com.ar/repository/archlinux/mate/$arch

Do you plan to host more packages there?

[karol@black ~]$ pacman -Sl mate
mate libmate 0.0.0-3
mate mate-common 0.0.0-1

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

It's nice to see someone's forked GNOME2. GNOME3 is just abysmal. Unfortunately it's come a bit too late for me -- I already switched to Openbox and I'm not likely to switch to anything else any time soon.

Still, keep up the good work. smile

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Repo is ready.
Use pacman -Sff mate-desktop-environment (Yes, its ugly) to void file exists conflicts
If gnome3 is installed, remove gucharmap with pacman -Rdd gucharmap

I am working to remove all file conflicts with gnome3.
Thankyou WorMzy & fsckd.

Good luck with that. What's with the horrid Ubuntu icon?

I won't use it, because I switched to tiny little window managers a long time ago, but I still want to congrate you on your courage to do this! If you spread the word, maybe you find people who help you keeping gnome2 alive.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

It's great!

Can I help you with devel/translate/mirroring/design (logo, etc.)?

P.S.: What about mote-video-player (replace for totem) and mate-edit (replace for gedit)?

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

hey, i just thought i would point out that there is another project similar to mate going on, called the bluebubble project. It is aimed at Fedora specifically. However, mate-desktop and bluebubble project should probably get in touch, being as they are doing the same thing.

http://k3rnel.net/2011/05/26/project-bluebubble/

you guys might be able to share some code, ideas and approaches to fixing issues/bugs, etc.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Running an up-to-date arch install, x86, cannot install 'mate-desktop-environment', because apparently all of the downloaded files are corrupt. I've run the install a couple of different times with the same results.

Hopefully you get this working, I'd love to have the classic Gnome environment again.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

BlueBubble don't look like a fork yet. It look like a set of RPM package. I will take a look into http://code.google.com/p/k3rnel/ when will available.

@FlyingIsFun1217: Sorry, low server resources and bad settings. If you have free time, join to IRC for try to solve the problem (if possible).

I see. (about bluebubble being .rpms at this point). however, i do know that there plan is to have gnome2 work in fedora 15, 16 and beyond. it will have to become a fork in order for this to work. parts of the DE will have to be reworked in order to work and support applications properly in the future.

anyway, i just thought i would point it out.

Thanks Perberos, this looks great.

If installing on a system that already has Gnome 3 and Gnome-Shell, would I want to uninstall those first?

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Hello,

This is very interesting and I am certainly waiting to see how it turns out. Good luck!

Two things I would suggest are:

1) See if you can modify all your stuff to install to /opt/mate so that it does not conflict with the current linux tree because in the future there will undoubtedly be situations where you need a certain version of a library for most applications but still require the older version for gnome2.

2) I like the Arch build system but you might get more interest if you create a very simple and generic linux (and unix) build system or script that works across distros just to compile gnome2. That way people using e.g fedora will still be able to join in with your efforts.

You might find the following link interesting:-
http://gnome.bullfreeware.com/

Although this uses the RPM system (and for IBM AIX) it shows the approximate number of packages you will end up needing to maintain. It isn't impossible so I wish you the best of luck!

This project could also be very beneficial because gnome2 can finally stop changing and start being made faster and more stable.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Thanks for doing this!

I've tried to install Mate on a fresh Arch install on a VirtualBox, but I can't get mate-control-center and mate-panel to build.

mate-control-center:

activate-settings-daemon.c:5:55: fatal error: mate-settings-daemon/mate-settings-client.h: No such file or directory

I do have mate-settings-daemon installed.

mate-panel:

sed: can't read mate-panel/mate-panel-add: No such file or directory

Everything else builds fine. I really hope you'll succeed with your DE.

Yes

Ok

PKGBUILD does all that. I will try to port mostly applications to newest lib versions.

That exists. ./configure --prefix=/opt && make && make install

Very interesting. I think I will jump on the boat. I hate Gnome3, and openbox isn't quite working for me at the moment. I want something a little heavier, but still light.
