I just discovered the "new" logos during start-up and frankly, seeing 8 Tux is far less pleasant than seeing 8 arches. The arch logo is much more simple and thus can be repeated many times without creating too complicated visuals... I can understand why the logo has been removed, even if I think it is a loss of the distro identity, but please not the penguins, disable this by default if you want but not the penguins !

Arch Logo is the right one for Arch ..... The Arch Way ...... or if you prefer the Arch Philosophy.
In short: an elegant, minimalist approach. [from The Arch Way (ArchWiki)].
And ... I'm not a lover of bootspalsh, high resolution login manager, heavyweight window manager and/or desktop environment. I don't use any login manager, console with 16 colors only, and twm as window manager.

Arch is great because it's a clean slate upon which to built upon i.e. no need to remove alot of packages afterwards, but just adding your own choises from the beginning...
This is not only about packages, but also patches and modifications. We all have different opinions, so it makes sence to ship vanilla and unmodified packages, except obviously when breakage would otherwise occure, and then let the users be free to use abs for their specific customisations.
I've several times stated that this is a smal example of many things that imho goes against this, so it's not _just_ about the logo!
Anyway, no matter if you agree on the above or not, then it has nothing to do with why the logo was removed, since some/all? devs aren't agreeing with my view on this, and removed the logo because most ppl dosen't see it anymore, as most use kms, and not because of it going against the arch principle...

I am disappointed that this was removed. I will be adding it back on my builds since I do not want to see penguins unless I am running an -rc kernel. The last kernel to use it was Arch's 2.6.38.7-1 package. You can look at it in the patch from ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/kernel26/ … 1-ARCH.bz2
The logo part of the patch starts on line 9057 up to line 14002. Cut those out to a new logo.patch file, change the references from 2.6.38 to 2.6.39, patch the kernel sources and recompile.

Even if it isn't the Arch logo there's still a logo. Or penguins don't count?
Sorry for the late reply. Yes the penguins are also logos. What I said was that " a clean boot without logos look a lot slimmer". So if there are going to be any modding of the kernel, why not remove the logos all together.
They only show up for a short while, fill no purpose, and takes up screen-space.

Changing the references from 2.6.38 to 2.6.39 can be done easily with a simple search and replace in vim:
:%s/2.6.38/2.6.39/gc
The 'c' at the end means that it will ask confirmation before each substitution.

I never opened my mouth about this, but I am happy.
The penguins are the default vanilla behavior from upstream, as anyone who has rolled their own is well aware. Patching is typically kept to a minimum in Arch, and this is in keeping with that simple concept.

We should open a bug report...

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but in case anyone is interested...you can disable the boot logo(s) entirely by adding logo.nologo to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst, for example:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/6d9615d5-08f3-46de-975d-a2b8d6e38e9b ro logo.nologo

Yeah, why remove Tux? Poor Tux

Will I be banned if I change my IP address every couple of minutes to rig the poll votes in favour of the penguins?

The Arch kernel maintainers disabled the bootup logo completely. You will have to visit Device Drivers >> Graphics Support >> Bootup logo in the kernel config.

I'm not to spazzed over this. Taking them out isn't so much of a bad thing. I personally don't care much. In Gentoo I'd always build Zen Kernels with just the monochromatic or full-color Tux, on Arch I usually reboot about once a month so I never pay close enough attention to care.
My vote: No logo. It solves all the problems, and there's no real reason to have 'em anyway

Arches at boot are a symbol for Arch cause they have been there since the beginning like Gentoo's.
And now cause the support has been removed from Linux-ck too, so it'll be nice to have an option for users to have them back
