[SOLVED] "Dazed and confused, but trying to continue"

Problem: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]
Solution: Remove the card and the messages from dmesg disappear. Get a different card.

Original Post:
My system keeps freezing if I use GIMP or Flash after a while. I also notice strange application hangs.

Here's the messages I keep getting:

Re: [SOLVED] "Dazed and confused, but trying to continue"

I've had this problem (on an old machine of mine).

Im my case it turned out that my ATI card was responsible. it was an X1300 fireGL card.

but i have also heard of networking cards + nvidia causing errors like this... power management and BIOS settings also being the culprit too. (your message suggests that it might be power-setting related). one option might be to see if your bios can be upgraded (is it up-to-date?? in not flash it, and see if the messages go away), another option might be to adjust power-related settings in A) the BIOS and/or B) adjusting your power-management settings in the kernel...

I'm my case, i was never able to fix the problem at all. I think for me, it was an incompatibility in the kernel with my older ATI card - the problem, didn't exist until upgrading kernel's after Kernel-Mode-Setting was first introduced. my ATI card never really worked all that well after that.... but i also didn't dig to deep into it, being as the machine ran fine, for what i was using it for, and also never crashed...

sorry, i can't be of more help, but maybe this might hint to a possible cause.

Re: [SOLVED] "Dazed and confused, but trying to continue"

FYI,

An nmi is a "Non-Maskable Interrupt".  Interrupts are used by your hardware to let the software know something important has happened.  Non-Maskable Interrupts are interrupts that cannot be turned off and ignored by the software -- They are always used for something really, really important (Like the power supply just died, so stop witting to disks).

This message says you received an NMI, but the driver has no idea why, cannot ignore it, and cannot clear it or shut it off.

I don't know how to fix it, but wanted you to know that your hardware is involved here, somehow.

I would like to say thanks! After removing my video card, the errors disappeared. However, the onboard video sucks on this computer. I hopefully will get a replacement in a few.

glad we could help wink

after posting, i had wondered if this older ATI card, might actually be causing the error...hopefully, this problem doesn't return for you...

in my case, it was a laptop, so i couldn't remove the card and was stuck ~ im glad (for you) it happens to be a desktop PC!
