I have been trying to setup a serif font in my terminal, and like Luxi Mono from the font-bh-ttf package.
I cannot, for the life of me, get it to render decently in urxvt. I have tried a straight install, building from ABS and downloading the tarball from xorg, freedesktop and installing it myself - to no avail.
This Xdefaults entry
URxvt.font: -b&h-luxi mono-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-iso8859-10
URxvt.boldFont: -b&h-luxi mono-bold-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-10
produces this abomination:
Using the xft setting
URxvt.font:xft:luxi mono:regular:size=10
URxvt.boldFont:xft:luxi mono:regular:size=10
Produces this in Arch:
...and the desired effect in Ubuntu:
I have no other issues with TTF fonts installed on my various boxes (droid sans mono, envy code r, etc.,) What am I missing?

Have you tried:
URxvt.font: xft:Luxi Mono:pixelsize=10
?

Gah!
I have tried every variation except with the gap between font: and xft...
Thanks Lite.
Why does the gap work?

Why does the gap work?
Isn't it the capitals that make it work, instead of the gap..?

No. I had tried all of those permutations. Adding the gap was the difference.
Weird.
[Solved] but weird.
