Ipod and android

So I'm not sure this belongs here, but I don't know where else to ask and this forum always seems to be full of some smart programmers.

Just got a new car and I've been trying to hook up my android phone to the usb port in the car to play music. The display info is rather useless, just track number and folder number. However, if you hook an ipod it display tagging info, file name, album name, etc.. I looked for a while and I can't find anything that will make the android phone work like an ipod when plugged in.

I was considering writing this my self but right now I have no idea where to start. Does anyone know of any good starting points for this? Has some one done something similar and is there code lying around somewhere?

Post in some android forum(s) - there are plenty around.

Tried the xda forums and didn't get any help, I've been trying in a lot of forums. What would help is someone who has already reversed engineered the ipod already or anything like that.
