keyboard backlight doesn´t work

Hi,

I already asked in the German Arch-Forum, but as I ´til now didn´t find a solution I will post my problem here too. Maybe round the world anybody may help me.

I got a Vaio (S-Serie) wich has a beautiful backlight for the keyboard. Under my second system (Ubuntu, Natty) the backlight works very well (turns on, when I use the keyboard and after a while turns off again). But with Arch the keyboard stays dark all the time.

May anybody tell me where I have to config this?

Thanks and greets from Berlin.

Re: keyboard backlight doesn´t work

Thanks for the reply, but I don´t refer to the backlight of the screen, I refer to a backlight of the keyboard. So that the keys are enlightend.

Re: keyboard backlight doesn´t work

Sorry, I somehow missed the word 'screen' when I glanced over the article.

http://www.linlap.com/wiki/sony+vaio+s says the code for vaio F series works on S series too http://code.google.com/p/vaio-f11-linux/ Have you tried that?

It's in the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=49563

Re: keyboard backlight doesn´t work

Wow, a kernel especial for Vaio-Laptops.

The true: I´m a little bit afraid of that (maybe just because I´m a newbie). My system is a high-performance audio-workstation and I have to say, that I never experienced such a great performance as now on Archlinux. I just use openbox and fbpanel to keep this power. And I´m afraid of destroying this great performance when I install a new kernel. On Ubuntu (where the backlight works) I by far don´t have this performance.

You think I´m exaggerating?

Re: keyboard backlight doesn´t work

You can always install the stock kernel back if you find performance loss to be an issue.

Re: keyboard backlight doesn´t work

There is a solution with the unpatched standard-kernel:

Seems as if with the last kernel-update the default-option of the backlight is set to non-active. To enable the keyboard backlight `/sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight` has to be set to "1". Also there is /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight_timeout`, where you may set: 0(default)=10secs, 1=30secs, 2=60secs and 3=unlimited.

Re: keyboard backlight doesn´t work

I've got the same problem with a lenovo X1 Carbon.  I can't find anything like kbd_backlight under /sys/devices/platform.  Any other ideas how to turn on a keyboard backlight?

Re: keyboard backlight doesn´t work

Hi Dave.  Note that this thread is two year old.  A lot has changed in that time and you are dealing with a different computer than was the original poster.   You might look under /sys/class/leds/

If not that, I am going to suggest we close this thread and have you start a new thread; I am not sure the answer to your problem will be related to the solution in this thread.  You can always link back to this thread if you still feel it is relevant.  If you start a new thread, post a note to that effect in this thread and I will go ahead and close this.
