I installed the latest version of Arch. I then installed kde-meta and nvidia packages. I then ran /etc/rc.d/kdm and it shows a login screen. I enter my username and pass. It was supposed to log in normally.
KDM accepts my username and password. Then it shows signs of logging in by displaying the little splash square. But it displays just for a moment before going back to login screen.
I have set DBUS in the daemons line. The fwm works perfectly displaying the same background.
Please tell the solution or a relavent log file.
I have an Intel Core 2-based DB33BU motherboard and a Sparkle (a cheapo) graphics card with am Nvidia 9500.
Edit: stated my problem better

Starting KDM as a daemon
Add "kdm" (without the quotes) to daemons array in /etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus network crond ... kdm)
did you edit the ~/.xinitrc file ?
Using xinitrc
The meaning and usage of xinitrc is very well described here.
Edit /home/your-username/.xinitrc. edit in....
exec ck-launch-session startkde

I already put KDM in the daemon list. I put the entry in xinitrc. But it doesnt help at all.
I tried the command "ck-launch-session startkde" but it replies $DISPLAY NOT SET CANNOT CONNECT TO X SERVER
But KDM leads straight to login screen irrespective of an xorg.conf.

First determine the session you are trying to start in kdm.
If that does not help refer to /var/log/kdm.log
Other than that I'm not sure what else you could do without further info.

Thats the most helpful advice so far. I included it here. I also marked the prominent events: starting the daemon and trying to log in. And kudos for the genius who invented wgetpaste to upload text files from the terminal.

Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

Actually the best way to start KDE, if you want KDE only is by inittab. Also which graphics driver do you use? That could affect the KDE preformance.
(fixed from initscripts to inittab)

could you post the daemon stanza of your rc.conf?

Very strange.
Seems that problem in klauncher start:
klauncher: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstreamanalyzer.so.0)
klauncher: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstreams.so.0)
Please, show output of command below:
strings /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6|grep GLIBCXX

Same thing happend to me today. Finding solution was little bit harder after three days of uptime and many new packages and updates.
Here's what you can do:
Turn ON PC, change KDE session to xterm. run "startkde", look for errors at output after kde crash.
In my case reinstalling "mysql" and installing "libgda3" solved the problem.
