Can't copy files to pendrive in nautilus, but I can with dd

Hi.
I'm having a really nasty problem with my laptop. Every time I try to copy a file to a Pendrive it fails, making the USB read-only or ejecting it without my consent (after which I have to physically unplug it and plug it back for it to even appear at nautilus again).
I discovered that I CAN copy files if I do it with dd as in:

"dd bs=4096 if=The.Tunnel.2011.Xvid-VODO.avi of=/media/AA5D-8F2D/The.Tunnel.2011.Xvid-VODO.avi"

I think it the problem is related to the copy bitrate...
Any clues?

Thanks
(also: it happens both in ubuntu and arch linux)

nautilus and dd are two extreme opposites - what about something in between e.g. can you copy files using a different file manager? or using cp on the cli?

Re: Can't copy files to pendrive in nautilus, but I can with dd

Sorry, my mind is rather absent. I did not have my USB plugged in when I did ls -l /media. It should have been

drwx------ 2 neodarkness neodarkness 4096 1969-12-31 20:00 AA5D-8F2D
drwxr-xr-x 2 root        root        4096 2011-04-28 21:26 cdrom
drwxr-xr-x 2 root        root        4096 2011-04-29 21:40 files
drwxr-xr-x 2 root        root        4096 2011-05-16 18:52 usb

Being  AA5D-8F2D the pendrive (the name seems to be ubuntu's default...)
This problem (along side with flash's general slowness), seems to be the last remaining issue my laptop has after about 3 years on linux. It's happened in many different installs across, at least, 4 different distros.

Weirdly enough, I tried copying files again (cp, pcmanfm, thunar and nautilus again) and had no problem with any. I'm, therefore, not entirely sure under which circumstances does the problem happen, but as I said, this has been an issue for years now. I was using the same pendrive as before, so I ain't got a clue about what might have been the difference this time :S
