I, and many others preffer using vim from the gvim package, in a terminal, because the regular vim package is built(configured) with a light feature-set, whereas the vim from gvim is full-featured(copy/paste from/to X, python/ruby support etc), while thus being not quite as light and having some more deps...

IMHO, it would be better to make a separate topic with a poll for this. smile

Hm, could a moderator make this thread sticky for the rest of the year?

By the way, great idea to do it with google docs. But it seems you have to rework the whole spreadsheet manually :-(
Will the spreadsheet be downloadable somewhere?

yup. someone does not "read" the rule before filling out the form.
BTW, i will run the data with my own script, so those who does not follow the rule(match exactly the package name) will not be counted.
my script : toLowercase -> match package name -> drop invalid data -> drop data with few votes -> sort -> list top 3~5

When you vote there is a category for music players, but for some reason it is not in the list of winners.

Re: LnF Awards 2011 - The best Light & Fast apps of 2011

Display Manager: LXDM - Has come on leaps and bounds in 2011. Does everything a DM is supposed and is eminently themeable and skinnable as well. I've been bouncing around DMs for a long time hopeing for something usable that was lighter than GDM and LXDM is the only worthy candidate.

Image Viewer: Viewnior - Incredibly fast, and automatically resizes the window to fit the image. Been looking for an image viewer like this for ages. Perfect for me.

Office Apps: Gnome Office - Despite the name, this is the ideal LnF office suite.

  • Abiword and Gnumeric are known of course,
Evince2-Light ought to be known as the best light document reader out there, but less known is perhaps
Ease, the gnome office presentation editor. Better than LibreOffice's editor imo and much much faster.

Torrent: Transmission. Can do what a torrent client should do and does it fast.

Video: Smplayer. In this case there is no substitute for quality. Simply better featured than any of the competitors and quite fast to boot as well. Certainly so compared to its main qt competitor, vlc.

Browser: Opera. Not the quickest to start up, but once it gets going it's a winner.

DE: Xfce. I preferred it over gnome 2 even without the speed benefits.

File Manager: Thunar. Dolphin is one of the few things I tend to miss from KDE. Not so since I discovered editable menu accelerators. I am now happy as a clam with Thunar, now the shortcuts are all made to my liking.

I'd say, such apps are not Qt-apps (which "pull very few kde deps") - they are KDE apps. As for Qt - of course it's just an excellent lib/kit with plenty of indeed clean (and some of them - multiplatform) Qt applications: fast, eyes friendly, programmers friendly, tools, docs, and so on - I know as far as I have a tiny ("light and fast") Qt project wink

It works great on windows as well. On my win7 gaming desktop I use 2 qt apps (clementine and vlc).

Re: LnF Awards 2011 - The best Light & Fast apps of 2011

I just moved something to [community] you guys might like.  It is called Lout, and it is the lightest replacement for LaTeX ever.

6MB installed, depends on nothing.  All batteries are included, from fonts to graphics.  Wikipedia has a good overview.  For more, take a look at the user guide (pdf).  (And for more than you'd ever want to know, there is an advanced user guide.)

Thank you - looks very interesting and compact indeed. Must admit, I haven't looked seriously at markup applications since I did my thesis in Waterloo Script almost 30 years ago! So, the time to revisit them is long overdue, and Lout looks much more inviting than most - the User Guide is great.

Not sure about the 'replacement' part but it it's definitely lighter than LaTeX.

Re: LnF Awards 2011 - The best Light & Fast apps of 2011

I'd consider it a replacement.  While it can not parse Tex files, Lout can produce output very similar to Latex, and does so with a very similar interface/language.  Basically, every single reason why Latex is awesome also applies to Lout.

(Also, thank you for the heads up.)

Except for the wide userbase. My personal weakness is troff, but I find myself having to use TeX whenever I work with other people in academia.

I almost agree with all the winners. It confirms that Arch users are my kind of people. I Still have a hard time explaining to the rest of the world why arch is so great and why I like lightweight and shell-based programs over heavy GUI stuff.

qubodup wrote:

Here it is.  I can't live without rox-filer. It is my file manager, app launcher, dock, and mount point manager in my xmonad desktop (and even in my full kde desktop).

As a file manager it is simple and fast but provides thumbnail previews of image files, quick access to "terminal here" and allows me to quickly type a command line to operate on the selected file. It allows me to quickly associate any command to open a file (or that type of file). My hands never have to leave the keyboard while I rapidly navigate the filesystem.

I keep an Apps directory with a rox-style "app dir" for each application that I use. There is a little script hidden in each "appdir" that can do any setup for the app, open multiple apps at once, etc.  With a key shortcut I pop open the Apps folder, type part of the name of the app (or click on its icon if my hand is on the mouse), hit ENTER and it runs.

One thing I like about the rox approach to app launchers is that each app has a Help menu item associated with it. Right click on the app icon and choose "Help" to open the help folder for that application. This gives me a place to accumulate documentation for each application and not lose track of it. Even my wife has quick access to the accumulated tutorials and videos for, say, Krita, by right clicking on the Krita icon. So I can say that rox filer provides an extensible help system big_smile

I keep a rox panel on the side of the screen to hold stuff that is need for a task. I have a different panel available for each workspace, and a keyboard shortcut for opening "this workspace's panel and desktop background"). Unlike most panels it is easy to drag apps, documents, and folders onto the panel. I think of it is a shelf where I keep stuff I need to use or keep track of for the task being handled in that workspace. Each item on the panel can be assigned its own keyboard shortcut.

So rox filer takes the place of a main menu, a dock, a file manager, a mounter, and a help system and right now it is taking less than 9 MB on my system.  I think that rox filer is the BEST light and fast app. smile

recently I felt that poppler renders pdf slow. I have found a replacement for epdfview or zathura -- mupdf.
This tiny pdf viewer uses some vim keybinds and renders really fast.

Yeah, mupdf is very fast and nice; i've used it for a long time... Btw, if preffering the zathura gui instead(hinting and toggle-index etc.), then the dev-version of zathura also supports mupdf as rendering backend...

Re: LnF Awards 2011 - The best Light & Fast apps of 2011

I agree with sitquietly, Rox-filer is simply amazing. Amongst the features I can't live without now are the use of every number keys as bookmarks. Every one is a folder I use regularly, and it just makes browsing the system incredibly intuitive and fast. Also, files recently created/modified have bold names. It can seem like a minor feature, but when you think about it, it means the files you're interested in are almost always higlighted, so you don't have to scan lists of files to find them, they just stand out. And the fact that it can be used with the mouse or the keyboard gives it immense versatility. The only feature missing in my opinion is the lack of tabs, as you always end up with many instances.

If you never tried Rox, then I highly recommend you try it, and really dig into it because it's full of not-so-obvious-but-so-very-useful features. It's the perfect example of a program who has speed, simplicity, and power, without any compromise.
