OK this one has me scratching my head. Having read a number of other postings I had figured out that I need libmtp, and other relevant dependancies. They are now installed. Mtp-detect successfully detects the device -output below. I have a rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/65-libmtp.rules as listed below. Despite this neither Banshee or Clementine will recognise that the device is detected. Has anyone got any ideas what I might be missing?

I notice that 43 people have viewed this in the last week, so there is clearly some interest in this. Has anyone got any clues?
I hesitate to say this but it just works in Ubuntu, although they appear to do it slightly differently - there is no limtp-rules file in /etc/udev/rules.d/ but there is one in /lib/udev/rules.d. There is also one in that location in Arch.
There is always the possibility that this is not a libmtp issue, but a permissions one, but I thought that the libmtp-rules file was supposed to address that?
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

I got my Android working in rhythmbox by creating an empty file called '.is_audio_player' in the root of the SD card on the phone. Maybe that would work for you as well with your Zen? That file need not be empty, and it can have stuff like:
audio_folders=Music/
folder_depth=3
output_formats=application/oggbut the first line alone has sufficed for me. This should also work in banshee.

i think the new version of libmtp is to blame. My Zen has been acting badly with rhythmbox and gpodder since i updated. I rolled back to libmtp 1.0.6 and everything seems to be working fine.

@manzdagratiano and @rotcjay - Unfortunately neither of these suggestions has moved me any further forwards, but thanks anyway for the ideas.
As it happens, mtp-detect is still detecting the device correctly, but it does not register itself with any apps. I am starting to think that this might be an issue with udev, so if anyone has a good idea how that is supposed to work, and if any possible recent changes might have a bearing on this problem I would be happy to hear from them.

In the end I have worked around this problem by installing gnomad2. This is a very simple device manager for certain mtp devices like the Zen, but it does the job. So if anyone else is struggling fruitlessly with libmtp and udev I suggest giving gnomad a try.

Just a further update on this one. Still no joy with either banshee or clementine. Gnomad2 works fine, but doesn't sync album art. So I thought see what amarok is like. Amarok works fine and syncs album art - result!! No idea why banshee or clementine refuse to work - go figure.

In 2010 i've been working on a small program to send media files to the ZEN. Have not used it recently so not sure if it still works.
It uses gtk2 , python , libmtp. It is still on my website: http://members.upc.nl/h.speksnijder4/so … index.html
At 34 kB a LOT smaller than amarok (50 MB?)
