rip(?) from cassette to mp3???

Hi,
I have an odd question. I have a large amount of the old cassette format music. Ideally, I'd like to convert it all to mp3 so I can listen to it on the PC.  Any ideas what software is available to do this??

One idea:

You might be able to connect a cassette player to line-in on your sound card and record from that using standard recording software (arecord? :-D) and then encode the resulting wav to MP3.

I don't know the laws for certain (nobody does), but I think that if you own the music on cassette, you should be able to legally download the MP3s from peer to peer or other networks.

Re: rip(?) from cassette to mp3???

Thanks Dusty.  I installed Audacity from repo and it takes a feed from the line in.

My next qyestion is this.  My CD player has RCA plugs. Is the center prong live and the outer circle the ground??

Also, On those little plugs that plug into a soundcard, there are three pieces of the prong separated by plastic. Obviously one piece is Left live, the next is Right live and the last is common ground. Problem is, which is which???

not too sure about the RCA cables, but i'm pretty sure on those little jacks, the little black bands carry the signal ... one is left channel, the other is right.

sounds like you're trying to make your own wire!

Hi Paranoos,

Yes, I'm trying to link an old Cassette deck to my sound card. You are wrong about the black bands. They are plastic an separate the (usually) chrome contacts. If you look, There are usually three chrome pieces to each jack. One is left, one is right and the last is ground. I just don't know which.   sad

Re: rip(?) from cassette to mp3???

OK, I found a site on the web that explained it all.

In RCA plugs the center prong is positive, the outer ring is negative (not ground really - but a return line)

In the mini-plug, the tip-most element is the left channel.  The middle section is the right channel and the remaining portion is the negative/ground.
