Re: Random kernel panics on boot. 2.6.38-ARCH

Ok, this is not really suprising as badfish pointed out that the bug should affect kernel from 2.6.38.6 to 2.6.39.1. So it may explain why 2.6.38.8 and 2.6.39.1 in your case crash.
I've tried to downgrade to 2.6.38.5 and so far I've no problem with the USB anymore. What's more, according to your tests 2.6.39.2 seems to be also OK.

Re: Random kernel panics on boot. 2.6.38-ARCH

No, no, you are misunderstanding here.
I built 2.6.39.2 as well as 2.6.39.1 and that is why there are no problems.
2.6.39.1 with the default arch .config does give problems (I did not try 2.6.39.2 with the default .config). I am not sure about the reason yet. Just thought of giving everybody a workaround in case somebody wants to use the latest kernel.

Here we have kernel26-2.6.39.2-1 out, so maybe somebody will check it out to see if there are still random freeze problems.

Ok, thanks aya for the precisions. Hope that we'll get some feedbacks from the official 2.6.39.2.

Re: Random kernel panics on boot. 2.6.38-ARCH

noob speaking her so please ignore if irrelevant,

i had random kernel panic like the OP

uname -a says:
2.6.39-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jun 6 22:37:55 CEST 2011 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) II X3 440 Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

i don't have usb hard disks but am USB wifi adapter and a usb receiver for a remote control

i wanted to try something so i changed the module blacklisting in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf  from the"blacklist pcspkr" type  to
"...
install MODULE /bin/false
...

so far so good (it has been 2 days... still keep my fingers crossed)

hope this helps

M

Re: Random kernel panics on boot. 2.6.38-ARCH

I have just done some tests for the official 2.6.39.2 and it did not panic on me. So, probably the official 2.6.39.2 is fine.
