Kernel panic w/ wireless adapter

Im using a realtek RTL8191S wireless usb dongle.  I have Kernel 2.6.38. I downloaded and compiled the drivers from realtek's website and issued modprobe 8712u and when I plugged in the device I get a kernel panic (ie: the system freezes and the capslock light blinks)  I even get a panic when I don't issue modeprobe and plug in the device.

Re: Kernel panic w/ wireless adapter

I bought this afternoon an Emtec ekco wi350 with the RTL8191S chipset, and it works out of the box on the 2.6.39.2 kernel. The r8712u module is automatically loaded when I plug the usb dongle. I had trouble with the command line tools so I installed wicd-gtk and after entering my WPA key and filling the IP/Gateway/DNS fields (I want a fixed IP so I didn't use dhcp) all seems well!
