I had my HP Deskjet 842C working fine with the last version of CUPS. But just now I was trying to print something, and the printer couldn't be reached, and wasn't printing. "Hmm," I thought, "maybe the new version needs a new configuration." So I deleted my configuration for the printer and tried to recreate it... And found that CUPS could not see any USB printers connected at all.
So I turned it on and off. Unplugged it and replugged it. Tried it with the usblp module enabled, and again with the module removed and disabled. As far as I can tell, nothing works. The kernel sees the USB printer, but CUPS doesn't.
Help?

Try https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 38#p946038 although it's just a guess on my side.

Unfortunately that's not the problem; I was blacklisting using /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
And yes, I'm back. Damn those stupid -dev packages.

Maybe this is caused by the usblp/libusb problem. My Samsung printer only works with usblp enabled (not the default anymore). You could try the cups-usblp package from AUR.

Hmm. Loading usblp does produce a device node... Is there any way to make CUPS use that device node without recompiling the whole thing?

Why not downgrade to the version that worked?

Same problem here with a HP LaserJet 1200. With a downgrade to 1.4.6 the problem is gone.

That's what I did - solved the problem. I will wait for a new package of cups, or a definite explanation and correction for version 1.4.7-1. Just part of being an Archer. ![]()

Arch Linux - rolling release distro, where people are wanting to downgrade to a previous version.
(found this gem in Barthalion's sig)
Anyone reported bugs - either to our tracker or upstream?

Hi
I also just ran into the sudden inabilility to access my Brother HL-2170W USB printer. After trying a few things, I checked the wiki on USB printers and found that, starting with CUPS 1.4, the usblp module needs to be blacklisted.
I used to do that in my rc.conf file but with the recent change to blacklisting, I lost my setting.
What I did was to add a .conf file to modprobe.d in which I blacklist the usblp module.
Now, I am able to access my USB printers with no problems, even with CUPS 1.4.7.
Hope this helps..

Hi Dave,
thanks for you comment, but unfortunately usblp is not the problem. usblp is blacklisted as well as Gullible Jones did it. It's a problem with the usb backend. If the problem occurs only with HP printers then it could be a side effect of fixing the bug #3405 because it is in the release info mentioned:
The libusb-based USB backend printed slowly to the LaserJet 1300 and other printers (STR #3405)
I submitted a bug report at the cups folks.

Hi,
the error still exist, even with version 1.50. And a simple downgrade isn't possible anymore because of the dependency to GnuTLS 2.6.
So what can I do? Switching to lprng?

Ah, the solution is quite simple: I installed hplip and the HP printer is seen bei Cups again.
