We started a thread in the Tips & Tricks section of our forum on Drop-down consoles. I think Tilda with byobu ROCKS, FTW! http://bjoernvold.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5347#p5347
My current desktop, sans compiz with the modded Emerald theme (will post those later):

I use tilda every day. I also use regular console windows, but tilda is the way to go for quick lookups or firing single commands.

This has been bothering me for sometime:
Tilda doesn't seem to grab colors from .Xdefualts and there's no config option to allow me to change colors beyond foreground/background. Has anyone found a way to do this?

I have been using tilda for a while (started when I read this thread)

Use a quake-like urxvt terminal instead.

I would love to, man, but it is slower to display vs. Tilda and even my regular urxvtc windows. I'm not sure why. Both my netbook (1.66ghz atom) and my desktop (2.8ghz core 2 duo) lag when bringing up the urxvtq window. At first I thought it was xdotool, but that doesn't give me any lag with bashrun.

yakuake comes pre-installed on this KXStudio here. I use it because it's there but the whole quake like terminal never interested me much.
I prefer a "alt+enter" approach to a disposable terminal

I've been using stjerm for quite a while now, it gets the job done and you can define colors trough .Xdefaults.

I checked it out, but it doesn't appear as if I'm able to have it run a command when it launches, or to restart itself and said command when it exits. I use these features with tmux in tilda and they work really well. I'll definitely keep an eye on stjerm, though, it looks promising. And it was definitely snappy.
