Moved HD to new computer - some problems [SOLVED]

I got a newer PC to use for Arch after the system board failed on my old one.  I just took the hard drive out of my old system and moved it to the new one.  Almost everything worked after booting up and running alsaconf to detect the different sound chip on the new motherboard. But I am having a few problems.

When I open smc (super-mario brothers clone) it opens full screen.  When I try to go to windowed it crashes the program and leaves my xfce messed up so I have to kill and restart X.  There is a similar lockup with bumprace where it hangs then I have to restart X from the console.  When I try to start frozen-bubble it just hangs before getting to the menu screen.  I need to do a kill -9 on its process to get things working again.  However, all games aren't broken since maelstrom runs perfectly.  I'm puzzled why some are broken while others work fine.

When frozen-bubble hangs and I do an alt-ctrl-f1 here is what I see:

bomberclone has the same kind of lockup when I start it, and the console shows the exact same thing except it doesn't have the [SDL Init] at the start of the first line.  I'm not sure if these have anything to do with the problem, but that is where the console is at when the programs hang.

Firefox seems to be working fine.  And I can do stuff in terminal windows as I would expect with no trouble so far.  So the box is operational and all, but I am a little bothered by the fact that a bunch of stuff that worked fine before is now broken, and after a couple days of working on it I can't figure it out.

I have a GeForce2 TI 64MB card in this machine, while the old one had a GeForce2 MX with 32MB in it.  However, I am using the nv driver instead of the current nvidia driver since both of those cards are so old nvidia considers them legacy and doesn't support them with the current driver.  Thus I don't think it is a video driver problem, but I could be wrong.  Maybe there is some config setting I need to change.   I did update the video ram to 65536 in xorg.conf.

I did try a pacman -Syu after moving the HD to the new system, but that didn't seem to change anything.  Is there anything else I missed doing that I should have done to get arch working correctly on the new system?

I would just guess that your xorg config could use a refresh, but that is a guess, did you start from scratch?

Hi Dibble,

Nope, I hadn't changed my xorg.conf, other than correcting the video ram size for the new card. 

After reading your post I did try running xorgconfig and rebooting, but it still has exactly the same behavior as I described before.  I did a diff on the xorg.conf and the previous one I saved and they ended up basically identical anyway, just some differences in the text strings for the monitor label and stuff like that.  It chose all the settings the same as I had them before.

I've never used hwd before.  Is this something that I might need to install that and see if it can figure my new hardware out?

To rule out the videocard try the vesa driver. If the problems go away then it's probably videocard/driver related. If using vesa helps then you could try a minimal xorg config without any options like ramsize etc, but only setting the driver to nv.

You could also take a look at the logfiles, who knows what useful info is hidden there...

Thanks for the tip.  I went into xorg.conf and commented out the video ram and nv driver lines and added a line with the vesa driver.  It is behaving the same way.  The only difference I noticed is that on the console after the games hang up now the hdsp and vdsp numbers are 1024 by 768 and the rest are all 0.  Before none of the numbers were zero.  I don't know if that means anything, but it is the only thing I could find different between having the vesa and nv drivers in use.

I checked /var/log/messages and didn't see anything that looked relevant, other than some messages about gconf.  I rebooted and tried starting frozen-bubble and bomberclone.  Both hung up as they have been doing.  Here are all the messages from the reboot till now:

I'm a little suprised to find gnome messages since I use xfce.  Are these games looking for some gnome libraries or other stuff and not finding them now?  It would be strange that moving the hard disk from one machine to another would cause that, but at the moment I don't know what else to go on . . .

Since the vesa driver didn't help I'm going to go ahead and switch back to nv.

gconf is used by a lot of GTK programs to store settings in a similar form to the windows registry.

My guts tell me this problem is related to the one described here.

It's a very wild guess though, so probably rubbish, but do you have the problem when you run twm or something without gdm and use startx instead? (just start the apps from the xterm) I want to rule out gconfd, xfce and gdm.

Does it only happen with SDL programs? (though not all??) Nothing in the kernel log either?

Thanks for the suggestion.  To test what you were talking about I exited xfce and ran startx from the console.  It brought me up in a gray screen with some xterms open.  I think that is twm, but honestly I'm not sure.  I ran bomberclone, frozen-bubble, and smc from the xterm as you suggested.  Bomberclone and frozen-bubble did the exact same thing - even the messages I saw on the console when doing alt-ctl-f1 were the same.  Smc didn't start up at all this time, while in xfce it started up with the wrong resolution and messed up xfce when I quit the game.  So that was a bit different.  But basically it seems like xfce isn't the problem since they still didn't work right without it.

I read through the link to the other thread you gave.  I am not using udev at all - should I try installing that and see if it solves this issue?  I know I need to do that eventually, but I thought I should fix this problem first.  Maybe I should do it now though.

I didn't see anything other than what I think are normal boot messages in /var/log/kernel.  Here is the last batch of stuff in case you see something I missed.

Only useful thing the logfile tells is that you use a rather old kernel. I wouldn't try udev with that version as quite a lot of things may have changed in between. All I can say is that I've done more or less the same as you, replacing almost all hardware except the hd, and I've had no problems at all. I'd try a pacman -Syu and if you've a custom kernel then update that too. You could try checking your memory and hd for corruption or badblocks too, and try reinstalling mesa and sdl to see if that helps anything. In short, I've no idea what could explain the weirdness other than hardware problems.

Ok.  Thanks for all the time you spent looking into this.  I'll upgrade the kernel before going to udev.  I'll also run a fsck to make sure my hard drive didn't get scrambled in the switch, that might explain why it can't find the files and hangs up when loading programs.

Well, your tips led to it being solved even though we had given up . . . .

I upgraded to the latest 2.6 kernel with a simple pacman -S kernel26.  Once that was done everything works fine.

I wonder if there is some hardware in this new box that my old 2.3.1 kernel didn't like but the newest version can handle fine.  Anyways, all the games now run ok.  When I feel brave I'll tackle switching to udev.

Great to hear that it's solved. (Though you upgraded from a 2.6.3, not from 2.3.1 ;-)
