i'm trying to install arch on another laptop (quite old) yet when i press enter to boot it comes up to and error message:
no filesyetm could mount root, tried:
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root on unknown block(254,4)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper not tainted 2.6.33-ARCH #1
i HAVE specified edd=off and acpi=off and noacpi in the boot line as those are necessary to boot on this laptop with other distro's

Could you post the contents of your fstab?
Lenovo Y450 + Arch x86_64 dual boot with Windows 7 + Openbox standalone + Arch default kernel + Nouveau + yours truly = A lot of *****in' in the Arch Forums.

i havent even got onto installing it yet so not really
it should be just 2 ext2 partitions and a swap on the disk but i assume 'root' is on Arches install disk

So, if I understand it correctly, this message shows up during bootign from Arch's CD, right? Maybe it has some strange disk controller, what's the HW configuration of the laptop?
