no filesystem could mount root: install cd

i'm trying to install arch on another laptop (quite old) yet when i press enter to boot it comes up to and error message:

no filesyetm could mount root, tried:
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root on unknown block(254,4)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper not tainted 2.6.33-ARCH #1

i HAVE specified edd=off and acpi=off and noacpi in the boot line as those are necessary to boot on this laptop with other distro's

Re: no filesystem could mount root: install cd

So, if I understand it correctly, this message shows up during bootign from Arch's CD, right? Maybe it has some strange disk controller, what's the HW configuration of the laptop?

Re: no filesystem could mount root: install cd

Perhaps the install disk contains the wrong program.....................
