Some update in the last 48 hours has Gnome all f!@#ed up! The weather applet blows up all the time, and so does Tomboy. I'm surprised that I am the first one to log this.
( I wish I knew what had been updated recently. )

OK, I calmed down a bit and ran this:
[me@mypc ~]# find /var/cache/pacman/pkg -atime 0
/var/cache/pacman/pkg
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/clamav-0.86-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/dbus-0.33-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/hal-0.5.2-3.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/gnome-media-2.10.2-2.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/gnome-themes-2.10.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/gnome-utils-2.10.1-4.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/totem-1.0.4-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/gnome-vfs-2.10.1-3.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/kdebase-3.4.1-2.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/libksba-0.9.11-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/gnome-volume-manager-1.2.2-2.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-plugins-mad-0.8.9-2.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/libcdaudio-0.99.12-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/vlc-0.8.1-6.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/nautilus-cd-burner-2.10.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/libgsf-1.12.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/libgtop-2.10.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/sudo-1.6.8-7.pkg.tar.gz
[me@mypc ~]#
Now I'm thinking something like 'gnome-vfs' or 'dbus' might be the culprit.

yeah you might want to try downgrading gnome-vfs. There's already another complaint about it here breaking nautlis.
To downgrade do:
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/<pkgname>-<pkver>-<pkgrel>.pkg.tar.gz
Also, you can have a look at your /var/log/pacman.log to get the list of recently upgraded apps.

not to open a new thread...
i've noticed that mail-notification 1.1-2 is totally useless. gnome politely asks me like every 10 minutes if i want to restart mail-notification because it has crashed. so, i've downgraded to 1.1-1 which works quite well.
