Failed to open display from the DISPLAY variable

I keep getting this message on many programs, does anyone know how to correctly configure this in what I would guess would be the xorg.conf?

Here is a specific example, but I have gotten it in quite a few programs:

[root@john-arch john_warren]# killall xfwm4 ; openbox & exit
[1] 5147
exit
[john_warren@john-arch ~]$ No protocol specified
Openbox-Message: Failed to open the display from the DISPLAY environment variable.

My apologies, here is my xorg log

Re: Failed to open display from the DISPLAY variable

In this example you're trying to run openbox as root, am I getting it right? What happens if you run it as a user?
Remove xorg.conf and try again.

Re: Failed to open display from the DISPLAY variable

Stop running things as root when it's not needed, also, you should use the session manager that xfce has to change the wm, instead of killing and running ob.

Re: Failed to open display from the DISPLAY variable

No, I was trying to replace xfce wm with openbox in xfce. This is a particularly bad example but it has happened with others citing things like cannot open dispay ':0'. Sorry I'm not being as clear as I would like to, but if I run into a better example soon I'll be sure to post.

Re: Failed to open display from the DISPLAY variable

Do you want to use xfce or openbox? I had the same problem when I was trying to open openbox. It was because xorg server wasn't running. When I tried launching openbox by using ~/.xinitrc alongside running straight to X in /etc/inittab instead of console, it solved the problem.
So, when you are typing killall xfwm4 you might be killing X server as well which could be causing this problem.

Best done in the session manager, not by killing xfwm4 and then running openbox.
