[SOLVED/UPDATED] CinePaint is too old, and is a buggy version.

So CinePaint is an excellent application for editing photos, and retouching film.

the current pkgbuild in /extra is 0.22.1-8 (just came through in my updates). myself, i had installed it from /extra only to realize how old the version was, and how buggy it was too, just try using the 'flipbook' and load a bunch of PNGs and watch all of the dialogue boxes and/or errors happen, there are also exporting errors, etc. 0.22 also tends to crash a lot.

however, if you build cinepaint from git (version 0.25) all of these problems are long gone, and it works prefect. (i guess i forgot to remove the package from extra / hence why it (almost) came through on my machine as an update..ooops, so i setup that package to not update now lol.)

maybe it's time to update the package in /extra to a more stable version??

i've never made pkgbuilds before, but i thought i'd put it out there, becuase 0.22.1-8 is a waste of time.

myself, i just blocked the update for CinePaint and will continue to use my stable 0.25 build instead.

PS: to build it from git, there is a script on the cinepaint website, and i forget the gcc CFLAG, but you need to pass the one that stop gcc 4.6.0 from treating warning as errors, and stops the compilation. if you do that it should build fine (it did on my 64-bit system using 4.6.0 just fine, haven't tried 4.6.1 yet, but i am sure if you have the dependencies installed, it will build.

Depends what do you call stable. I think Arch ships releases marked as stable by upstream, so if the git release is marked as a development one the maintainers may not want to include it in the repos.

fedora ships 0.25

im also fairly positive that Ubuntu has 0.25 too. although i don't have a link off-hand.

0.22.1-8 is not stable by any standards, i also know for a fact that the CinePaint developers weren't even aware that people were running it on Arch until me and another guy pointed it out. they don't pay much attention outside of the project, and the truth is CinePaint is mostly used in Hollywood - so that is where there focus tends to be (CinePaint developers sometimes end up with jobs in Film Studios like DreamWorks, for example). they don't really keep track of each distro.

but i know that 0.25 is very stable, and should be considered as a candidate to be included over 0.22.1-8

0.22 is very old (as in i remember it being packaged in Ubuntu Dapper, and Fedora 9 or 10)

Cinepaint is somewhat currently unmaintained. When I rebuilt it, I knew it was old but I didn't know there was so much problems with it. I'll look into updating it.

awesome.  ya, it is too bad that more people don't use it, or realize how good it is...it still supports higher formats than Gimp, and is better for retouching high-resolution Photography... but i mainly use it to retouch animation   it's too bad more people aren't working on the code, as well... but 0.22 would never give someone the impression, that CinePaint is decent// if they actually got into using it. thanks Snowman, bigup Montreal !! im over here in Toronto
