XBMC freezes on exit

Hi, I have XMBC installed on my arch system and everytime I want to exit it, it entirely freezes and I have to kill it from system monitor (it happens every time so now I run it in windowed mode so I wont have to restart comp every time I test something).

program isnt laggy or anything while Im at it, its just when I exit that it totally freezes, the log states its a python or pulseaudio error of some kind but I have no idea on how to proceed.

Here is the final lines of log:

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

Previously I had the same setup as you (gnome3 and closed source nvidia) but I decided to try KDE so now I am on KDE4 + nouveau, this is the only thing that doesnt work, on gnome3 + closed source I cant remember if It worked or not, I THINK yes.

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

Hi,

i have the same issue since last friday (i guess).

Using XBMC 10.1 from Gnome3 on 64 Bit. Having Intel-Grpahiccard, so no closed source drivers.

My log looks similar. Last line says:
NOTICE: stop python

Debug-Log doesn't give any more information.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Michael

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

Hi, I am having the same issue here.

Using 64 bit, intel video, just have core Arch system with X, GDM and XBMC 10.1-3

Doesn't matter what option I select (Shutdown, Reboot, Exit, Suspend, Hibernate) XBMC just freezes. I very rarely get a crash log at all. On the 1 or 2 occassions it has actually generated, the last line is "stop python".

Besides this, XBMC is working just fine (only audio podcatcher plugin refuses to play any podcasts - lists podcast titles but will not go any further)

Seems odd, my previous install worked perfectly (both podcaster and shutdown). I don't remember which version of XBMC (assuming 10.1-2) as my old media box (8 year old pentium) finally gave up the ghost, so I built a new box just 1 week ago and started from scratch.

If I switch to a console and pkill X, I am suddenly returned to GDM and all is well again (I am able to restart/shutdown from GDM, so it is not user permissions or a session issue).

This is rather painful, as this is set up as a media box connected to my NAS and TV, controlled by IR Remote. I really do not wish to have a keyboard attached to shutdown......grrrr.....

Anyone with any ideas, greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

PS. I noticed XBMC is using it's own bundled version of Python 2.4, could this be the issue? (and wondering why it is not at least using 2.7!)

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

UPDATE

Just been messing aroud and I have discovered this:

I installed Xbmc on my main desktop and exit/shutdown/restart all worked perfectly.
Thinking it may have been a corrupt download I did the following on my media box:

pacman -Rs xbmc
pacman -Scc
pacman -S xbmc

Removing Xbmc and purging my package cache to force a download when I re-installed it
Still no go.
So then I tried on my netbook.
Xbmc installed and locked up on exit/shutdown/reboot as on my media box.

The main difference I could come up with between my netbook/media box and the main desktop is the first 2 are intel video chips (xf86-video-intel), whereas my main desktop is nvidia (closed drivers).

So I uninstalled xf86-video-intel from the media box and replaced it with xf86-video-vesa. Upon booting Xbmc, exit/shutdown/reboot are now working.

So it appears to be an intel driver or X combined with intel issue - at least for me.

Hopefully this can promt someone with some more know-how into a solution.

Cheers.

UPDATE

A little more investigation and it seems to be DRI (in my case) disabling DRI solves the problem, but of course, everything slows to a crawl. And it does make sense that it is the intel driver, as in my media box, all was well until I got the 16 June update to the driver. Since then, it went pear shaped.

Still investigating........

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

Ok, I have solved the issue - at least for myself, but it should work for intel users:

It is a conflict between Xbmc and intel-dri-7.10.3

Solution, downgrade intel-dri and libgl to the following versions:

i686

intel-dri-7.10.2-2
libgl-7.10.2-2

x86_64

intel-dri-7.10.2-2
lib32-intel-dri-7.10.2-2
libgl-7.10.2-2
lib32-libgl-7.10.2-2

Cheers.

I had this issue for months, glad to have a workaround, though I don't like downgrading as a solution. I'm just gonna keep ssh'ing from my phone until it is solved tongue

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

Hi,

thank you so much padfoot!!! It's working for me. Just downgraded intel-dri and libgl and exiting xbmc is now not an issue.

For me this is an acceptable workaround. So thanks again!

Michael

@ KlavKalashj and mod24

Glad I could help.

You may want to keep an eye on the following bug report for resolution: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/11690

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

I have the same problem on an ATI Radeon 5670 graphics chip with both the xf86-video-ati and catalyst drivers. I'm using Archlinux x86_64 too.

Anyone found a solution to this? hmm

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

@ amrhassan

Try downgrading ati-dri and libgl to 7.10.2

The common package among us all is libgl.

This is the most likely culprit.

Please report back if this works for you.

Cheers.

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

Thank you very much, downgrading the said packages made it work again!

I had trouble finding the older packages, but luckily I had them on my Pacman cache, so if anyone needs them, I could upload them somewhere.

Cheers.

Works for me as well (Intel GMA 4500).

And there was no need to downgrade lib32-intel-dri and lib32-libgl on my system, btw.

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

UPDATE

refer to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39219

Have just compiled and tested a patched version of libgl-7.10.3

Xbmc now exits cleanly. The patch is available on the bug report (for those who want to apply it now).

Otherwise, just waiting on the mesa dev's response / fix to be applied to the source tree.

Cheers.

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

Thank you very much padfoot! I have the same problem with xbmc freezing on exit. In the link you mentioned above at (bugs.freedesktop.org), Henri Verbeet will push the patch upstream. Looking forward to getting the patched libgl 10.3 as an update.

@krnekhelesh

Yes, I'm just testing the modified patch, and if all is good, an upstream push will fix the issue.

Glad I could help.

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

@sandovalg

Patch tested and ok on 32 & 64 bit Arch 2.6.39.3. I am running the patch on my media box without any issues. Tested it on my netboot without any issues arising in any other software. You can download the patch from the bug report above, or wait for an updated version of libgl once the fix has been pushed into the mesa tree.

Of course, if you don't want to mess around with patching and compiling the mesa libs, the easiest solution for now is downgrading to libgl 7.10.2

Cheers.

Re: XBMC freezes on exit

UPDATE

Mesa bug has been closed and a fix pushed into both the 7.10 and 7.11 branches (this just missed the libgl 7.11rc2 release Arch has in testing).

So the fix should be released in the next mesa release (either 7.10 bugfix update 7.10.4 or release of 7.11)

Of course, you can get ahead of the game and compile the source from git if you like http://www.mesa3d.org/

Cheers.
