icu - I need two different versions installed!

How do I install 2 different versions of a package?

I had icu version 4.6 installed (pinned), but today I had to upgrade it to allow installation of the DVD authoring software Bombono, and this has broken Supercollider-git (the sced/gedit part of it, anyway) *. Given that I have a very important gig in just over a week, I cannot update Supercollider for fear of breakage**, but I also need the DVD authoring capability of Bombono for the same reason, can I install the two versions side-by-side somehow so that both packages are happy?

* making 4.6 -> 4.8 symlinks doesn't work, it seems the interface may have changed.
** The state of Supercollider in Arch was very fragile when I installed it, and it took me weeks and lots of hacking to get it working. The situation may have improved but I really cannot take the risk this week.

At least with some packages it's possible to install them into /opt - I use different versions of firefox this way. I'm not sure it will work with isu though.
Have you tried recompiling supercollider-git against the new version of icu?

No, like I said, messing with supercollider is not an option at this point - after I've finished this round of development and transferred the results to my mobile rig I'll see how much more stable the sc package has become. In the meantime I may just extract the icu 4.6 files alongside the 4.8 files and make a note that I've done it. Can you foresee any major problem with that?
