Problem with data recovery

My partition is damaged and I can't dd or ddrescue it.
Every time I get an "Error reading file Input/output error"
This drive is reset when rebooting, but how can I reset it on the fly?

I tried

hdparm -w /dev/sdb

and got

 resetting drive
HDIO_DRIVE_RESET failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

I don't want to reboot for every failed file.
These are home video files, and want the chance to ddrescue at least part of the file without rebooting.

Re: Problem with data recovery

Try testdisk?  I used it recently to rebuild my lvm partition's superblock.  It may help.  If you need a live environment to use it, I suggest PartedMagic or SystemRescueCD or Gparted live cd's.

Re: Problem with data recovery

Looking for testdisk led me to Photorec. Hopefully by the end of the day all will be recovered.
I did look into the testdisk and I found quite a few superblocks to use as alternates.
