open a .doc document

whats the latest that everyone is using for opening document files of the .doc type.

most of my documents are .doc.  i spent that last 10 minutes looking at various ways to find the quick answer, but nothing is popping out of the blues.
i think we need a wiki on this, or something.

just for those who wonder how i couldnt self-answer such a basic question like this, this is what i have done

googled it, searched the wikis, searched the packages, searched the forums. tried kwrite, looked for open office in the packages, and in the wikis, nothing yet.  i came across koffice, and then libreoffice, and notice that most of the listings in the packages were of libreoffice.  is this the hot linux program?

i would install openoffice if it were listed in the packages, but its not.  i like to use whats available on the repos mainly.

Yes, LibreOffice is the most commonly used, if I may guess.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

From both the OpenOffice and LibreOffice pages on the wiki:

Official support for OpenOffice.org was dropped in favor of LibreOffice.

I just use Google Docs to either edit there or export it to another format.

No..... if one doesn't read everything, one misses the bits that one hasn't read. roll

Of course, if one doesn't read thoroughly, and if one doesn't make sure that one understands what one is reading, then one could easily miss all.

Although this thread should have been in the Newbie Corner, I find your attitude aggresive at least. You had nothing more to add to the conversation yet you had the urge to attack the guy and then they call you forum 'fellow'.

Gbak, if you find a particular forum post offensive, use the report link instead of flaming back yourself. tomk is speaking in general terms and i fail to see where his (albeit superfluous) tongue-in-cheek remark is aggressive towards wolfdogg.

Let's keep it civil from now on please.

Re: open a .doc document

Libreoffice is the "main" office suite in arch (possibly linux as a whole?) now. Koffice is in the process of being renamed to the calligra suite (calligra is in kde-unstable if you're interested) and iirc it can read MS office files but cannot export to them.
