Dear Archers

While merging .pacnew files, I am now locked out of user group. Cannot log in. Posting this from another PC.
Mepis 11 live CD available. Pl. suggest a remedy

Use a liveCD to fix it or the booting in the single mode.

Edit the config files and restore the proper settings or use the ones from your backup.

Hint: look at your /etc/groups and /etc/passwd files.

Pl. treat me as a NOOB and elaborate a bit. I looked at /etc/groups, but my log-in id was not there. I created a new user, and put 'wheel' also, but unfortunately, since I did not edit sudoer's file, I cannot sudo also

How to get back my root login? Pl. advise

How about invoking the bash shell as described in this wiki article

This method launches bash instead of the init scripts at boot time, so it does not boot to a very usable state. But you will be in bash as root. Use passwd to change the password for root, and reboot
