Maybe you'd like something like PyMP... It's a frontend for MPlayer, and seems to be designed with music in mind rather than movies. I've tried to make a PKGBUILD for it a few times, but it uses a text file with the prefix in it instead of ./configure, so I got sort of stuck... I figure I should have tried using echo or something, maybe I'll get working on it again at some point...

Huh. I thought I'd seen most everything of this sort of thing but that's a new one to me. It looks like it might be a little limited for what I want but, then again, I don't see anything wrong with it. mplayer, python, remote control, CLI/GUI. That's all good.

I'm not sure I'm following the buildscript problem and I (still!) don't know a lot about doing proper Arch buildscripts. Is maybe a 'sed -i 'blah' setup.py' an option? And there, too, I think the python install system takes some arguments of its own, kind of like configure.

Anyway - thanks for the tip and I'll see about giving it a try. smile

Re: What music player do you use?

I use XMMS for individual mp3s (such as top40 stuff, the odd remix of a song, etc) and streaming audio.

And I also use mpd/gmpc for all the albums I've ripped.

Rhythmbox takes aaages to start streaming audio for some reason and has the kind of interface better suited for albums rather than individual mp3s, hence I used it quite a lot before I discovered mpd/gmpc.

Overall, I must say that I can't do without XMMS, hence that's what I selected.

Well, now that I installed to $HOME as a test:

tar xf pymp-0.9.tar.bz2
cd pymp-0.9
make PREFIX=/usr install

should do it, assuming that's where it needs to go.

At first it froze up in a couple of places for some reason but seems to be playing smoothly now. It lacks library functions, but it's still nice. One window with simple GTK/Python deps and mplayer-powered. 8 files of 44k, not counting the pixmap. As the README says '-Really freakin' tiny'.  Thanks. smile
