Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,
I got a serious overheating problem. I'm on a 64 bit laptop with a Radeon Mobility HD 3650. Everything runs smooth at about 60°C with composite XFCE. Only when I run a game it only takes minutes for the PC to get hot enough to simply shut down.
I'm not even sure, whether it is a GPU or CPU problem, but GPU is the first to start looking as it's a game related thing so far.
I use catalyst 11-5 as 11-6 produces other problems, but this problem goes on for much longer.

Can anyone confirm this, has a solution or a tip to look for me?

I did a per-minute log of CPU temperature while running BEEP:

Di 19. Jul 13:55:57 CEST 2011
temp1: +65.0°C (crit = +126.0°C)
temp2: +65.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)
Core 0: +63.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +63.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

Di 19. Jul 13:56:57 CEST 2011
temp1: +81.0°C (crit = +126.0°C)
temp2: +81.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)

Core 1: +77.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

Di 19. Jul 13:57:57 CEST 2011
temp1: +92.0°C (crit = +126.0°C)
temp2: +92.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)
Core 0: +85.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +88.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

Di 19. Jul 13:58:57 CEST 2011
temp1: +30.0°C (crit = +126.0°C)
temp2: +97.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)
Core 0: +96.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +91.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

Sadly I cannot get GPU temperatures too, so this could also mean indirect temperatureincrease. I does look quite CPU sided though now :-/

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

You can get GPU/Mem clocks with :

aticonfig --od-getclocks

Fan speed:

aticonfig --pplib-cmd "get fanspeed 0"

Temperature:

aticonfig --od-gettemperature

I found this on internet, I don't use catalyst on my actual laptop.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I recently added some GPU info to my conky. I now noticed that when I play videos on VLC, the GPU load stays 0% - CPU load is around 8% so nothing big either. I'm just wondering if this is normal? (not an HD movie, just dvd rip)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hardware accelerated video is only for HD codec like H264, VC-1, ... ?

Maybe an answer. But for a dvdrip, I think it not relevant !

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello,

I have a laptop with VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M], I have tried to install xf86-video-ati driver, but i cannot see any changes in how my laptop behaves. Besides what`s written in the wiki, are there any other steps that i should do?

@Vi0L0 & all others:
I recognized that I forgot to put 'radeon' into the blacklist of MODULES or add 'nomodeset' to my kernel line after a fresh arch install some days ago, but i can't find any problems - everything seems to work fine... Is it still necessary?
Thx for answering!

I never added radeon to the blacklist, too. Did add nomodeset to the kernel line. No drawbacks either. I'd like to get an answer on this as well.

Hey Arathis,

I have the exact same graphics card. I noticed that my laptop too became very hot after about a year of usage. To solve it I had to clean my laptop (get the dust out). It was blocking the exits of my fans. Normally information on how to do so will be provided by your laptop manufacturer.

I now do it almost twice a year, no overheating problems anymore smile

Hope it helps!

Thanks Denacke, I'll try that. Although it seems very CPU-specific. I run at 1.6GHz now for games and am doing fine so far. Whole 2.4GHz would be much better though ;-)

edit: Indeed. Tried gnome shell with 11.7 too. Same shit.

Altering the PKGBUILDS is easy enaugh, just removing the blk related patches is enaugh since it has now updated to don't need those patches.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

catalyst 11.7

sorry for delay - im in the middle of changing job and the city...

anyway what i can see in 11.7:
- up to kernel in version 3.0 official support;
- GNOME3 isn't working for me at all :-) i can only see wallpaper... i don't have time so i only checked 2 things
1) is it working for clean/fresh user : NO
2) is it working on radeon driver: YES

as csslayer reported in commants to aur's catalyst:

csslayer wrote:

Good news, I already test 11.7 and the powerxpress works very well. amdcccle provide a new option to choose the display card, for me (KDE 4.7 and chakra), only logout will switch the card. The bad news is this might only works on 2 ati card, not ati/index. (Have hd 4250/5470)

that's really good news, and the fact that it's working on our pxp-support-free normal catalyst package is also nice.

catalyst-test's powerXpress support - i can see that there's a lot of changes in aticonfig to perform amd/intel switching.
And those changes aren't good for me - i cannot test it well because doing:

    aticonfig --px-dgpu

isn't running:

    /usr/${_lib}/fglrx/switchlibglx intel

anymore (i also straced it). Well not in my case. In my point of view it's doing nothing (it should switch me into radeon) - but maybe it's because i don't have any intel card ;-P. Who knows?
On the other hand switchlibglx script is still provided by ati and other distros in the driver's package so i guess it should be used... somehow, maybe at least for intel's card owners.
I placed "/usr/${_lib}/fglrx/switchlibglx intel" call in pxp_switch_catalyst - this is some kind of temporary solution, with it at least i can switch into radeon...

Also as for now i don't see any good reason to look into pXp switch closer - from version to version there are some changes made by ATi - i think that we shall wait for this functionality support to be finalized.

If i won't add it when nomodeset isn't added then radeon module will be loaded, kms will start and X will brake.
So either fglrx in MODULES or nomodeset/vga in kernel options.

Is HDMI out working again with 11.7? OR did a minor 11.6 release fix this allready?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

You mean OpenGL ES? Catalyst (as the binary blob from nvidia) doesn't work with OpenGL ES.

Yes, I'm sure. It was tested and it doesn't work. Open source drivers only, because OpenGL ES in binary blob seems to be very bad. This is also the reason why Arch Linux has this OpenGL ES thingy disabled by default for KDE 4.7, though there is something in testing.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I tried to install catalyst-total package and packages from [catalyst] repo on my laptop Acer 5820TG.

It worked only in descrete gpu mode (in bios). In switchable mode X dont start.

Then i tried to install it with AMD installer in LinuxMint 11 (external HDD) and got very same error, but with generated package Ubuntu/natty (--buildpkg in installer) all worked fine.

Is there an option to see what generated .deb package does and define the difference to implement it in PKBUILD?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@Reiver:
Are you sure about that? Did you check if driver was installed properly? Did you try running any 3D app? Was powerxpress switching working? Did you check both cards?

Damn, if that was true, then I would be very happy - I have a 4820TG. I never was sure whether timelinex had powerxpress switching or acer did switching handling their own way. Anyway this seems promising...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I switched gpu then logout->login(through gdm).
aticonfig --px-igpu
aticonfig --px-dgpu

After that started fgl_glxgears(with igpu results lower) and powertop(10-12 vs 20-24).

Now i'm using acpi_call to turn off hd5650 in Arch, because of crash with vgaswitcheroo(with radeon) and fglx(starting X in switchable). But really would like such feature to be available in Arch.

Switching only worked with Ubuntu/natty generated package (even installer didn't work there)

BTW both Arch and Mint were x86_64

PS maybe i should try CentOS with RedHat generated package

anyone know why
#!/bin/sh

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

linux 3.0 is in [core] repo
more info: http://www.archlinux.org/news/changes-t … filenames/
catalyst package has been updated in both repo and AUR.

@totex71
well... i suggest you to copy this sh script content into a file (let's call it filename.sh), then make this file executable (with ie. chmod u+x filename.sh command), and then run it (with ie. sh filename.sh).
Make this all as root because you need root priviliges to access /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so file.
