Getting into Networking

I want to start getting into learning about networking and communications, but I have no idea where to begin. Can I get some recommendations on where to start?

Re: Getting into Networking

I got started with Beej's guide; http://beej.us/guide/bgnet/. It's humorous and covers a lot of important stuff. You'll need to know C fairly well to follow along.

Re: Getting into Networking

More serious reading should most definitely include Tanenbaum's "Computer Networks" http://authors.phptr.com/tanenbaumcn4/
It's a pretty good book to get the whole big picture and get acquainted with the essential protocols in use today.
