what caused this panic?

I was happily doing stuff on my Arch Linux machine last night, and suddenly it crashed!   What I did right before was type 'sync' in a command line, something usually do a few times a day always without any surprises.   This time, it crashed hard and I saw this on the screen:

Is there a clue in this mess as to what happened?  Was it a one-time fluke, e.g., "cosmic rays"?  Bad motherboard?
