restoring permissions and how to use su

I had all my permissions fargled by accident... dammit!

Anyway, I can no longer su - it says access denied whenever I try to su to root. I can't do it via ssh or locally. I can log in as root while physically at the terminal.

Is there some way to diagnose the problem? (auth.log isn't helpful, just says auth failed)

Is there some way to restore permissions created during the initial arch install?

You're in luck - I recently had a similar accident (caused by me thinking I was way cleverer than I actually am), and I solved it this way, thanks to invaluable advice from bardo and cactus.
