Network manager takes a long time to reconnect if I close the lid and xfce4-power-manager suspends the laptop.
If I call pm-suspend from a terminal or hit my power button (configured to sleep via acpid), everything works instantly upon waking up.
Does xfce4-power-manager call a different suspend mechanism than pm-suspend?

I have the same behaviour with Gnome3. Hence I think it is not a special problem with the xfce-power-manager, or rather the gnome-power-manager shows the same problem.

I'm having the same issue with xfce4-power-manager.
I think when xfce4-power-manager suspends it stops NM and starts it when the laptop is resumed.
So it seems its restarting, taking quite some time to reconnect.
I'll probably use a hotkey to sudo pm-suspend until I find a solution for this issue

any news on this? I have the exact same problem with gnome 3 also.

fixed it by having pm-suspend execute when lid is closed. And using gnome tweal tool to set close lid action to nothing.

I've just upgraded to Gnome 3 and I've had a tinker with it to make it look the way I want it and overall I quite like it, but I have a few issues that I need help with.
1. The top panel is semi transparent with green and magenta horizontal banding. This could be because the top panel in the old gnome, had been set to be partly transparent prior to the upgrade but I don't know how to put this right.
2. Is there a way to only increase the size of the text underneath the icons in the Applications menu screen as it's way too small?
3. I've still kept Cairo Dock at the bottom of the screen but there is a slight jerkiness/stutter with the parabolic zoom, the motion is just not as smooth as it was with Gnome 2. Could this be because my graphics card is not powerful enough for Gnome 3 (ATI HD 4830), or could it be a fglrx problem?
If anyone can help me out with all this then I'll be very happy. Thanks.

Hi Angel Lin22,
you should post your problem as a own thread. Actually you've posted it as a reply in a thread about the network-manager performance, which has no absolutely relation to your questions. I think, the 'Newbie Corner' would be a good place.
But in advance a few answers so far I know:
2. Is there a way to only increase the size of the text underneath the icons in the Applications menu screen as it's way too small?
The best way to change fonts and font sizes in gnome3 is using the tweak-tool.
You can install it with
# pacman -S gnome-tweak-tool

I think, the Cario panel doesn't support gnome3. The UI philosophy of gnome3 is completely different. But I'm not sure if there is a way to use it anyway at gnome3.

I did this for a while, but I need the flexibility of the gui manager. For example, I don't want it to suspend if my laptop is plugged in.
