on my own after successful install of Arch

Hi guys...

I'm not totally new to linux, but nearly totally wink

anyway, over the years, I've tried Slack and some derivatives, Mepis (which sadly won't boot on my pc, bad bios I think) and some other Linux flavours, but I always fled back to trusty old 2k/XP...

Today, I tried again to install linux (Arch this time) to a spare harddisk I have lying around (so as not to have any hassles with dual booting etc, I would really like to run Linux Only...)

It installed quite easily (base only, plus python and some other stuff I knew I needed), and afterwards it was easy enough to get pacman to install some packages I knew I wanted. Xfce4 and hwd installed easily, but after hwd -xa I didn't have the first clue how to get into xfce...

It's really frustrating, can anyone tell me how you configure your pc to boot into xfce instead of into the black dotty X?

It would also be nice to know what the normal v and h refresh rates of a sxga+ laptop screen (1400x1050) are, for some reason hwd does not detect the optimal screen resolution so I will have to use xorgconfig manually...

I'm bound to have plenty more questions, but I will definitely feel more at ease in a graphical environment...

the best idea would be to install gdm or kdm and then write (as root)

 /etc/rc.d/gdm start

or

/etc/rc.d/kdm start

you can also just use (as user) the following command:

echo startxfce4 > .xinitrc

I summon daemons from the depths of /etc/rc.d

But is startxfce4 the way to start xfce4? why didn't I just try that out wink will keep you posted, even though I won't have more time today.

If you want XFCE4 to start from CLI, put startxfce4 in your ~/.xinitrc and then type startx.

First port of call for most things and tremendously useful are the wiki pages linked from the arch homepage..

using Arch and setting up  a DE / WM was daunting for me too, was very grateful for the excellent documentation that accompanies most things Arch.

Persevere - its very much worth it.

Keep up with Arch dryhte, I was in your exact place only months ago; I had tried nearly every distro known and always fled back to winXP.  Arch Linux just worked and held my interest.  Don't get too frustrated with a problem, because there are plenty of helpful people here smile

Choosing what you boot into is set in the /etc/inittab file.  The best thing to do is to boot into a display manager, at which point you may log in and choose your preferred desktop environment.  I, personally, like gdm the best.  Here is how you configure your arch box to boot into gdm:

1. Know the path to gdm (type 'which gdm'). 
2. Open to edit the /etc/inittab file
3. Look for a line that starts with "x:5:respawn:"
4. After the "respawn:" enter the path of gdm binary (most likely /opt/gnome/bin/gdm) with the nodaemon option, e.g.:

x:5:respawn:/opt/gnome/bin/gdm -nodaemon

That should allow you to boot into gdm without typing anything in the console.  Further, you should be able to choose xfce from within gdm.

Hi guys... I managed to get into xfce so I was able to do some web browsing wink

I like xfce because it's really, really pretty wink

I have another problem I can't seem to get solved easily, though... and that is that whenever I try to select sxga+ graphics, my screen gets totally garbled. Do you reckon that would be solved by installing the ATI drivers? I really can't live with only xga graphics wink

apart from that, configuring xfce is a breeze.

I might think about using gdm or something like that, but as of yet I'm only experimenting.

Oh, another little problem... for some strange reason I always have to type dhcpcd before I get a network connection. Is there a way to have that running automatically? thanks...

for using dhcp at boot-time:

in your rc.conf there are a "eth0="blaha"

change blaha to dhcp:

eth0="dhcp"

in /etc/rc.conf see if you have

eth0="dhcp"

then further down make sure you have 'network' in your DAEMONS=()

Thanks... any ideas about setting 1400x1050 without the garbled screen? I know it must be possible, because slax popcorn manages to do it in xfce4/slackware...

Yes ou can do that by adding a ModeLine, unfortunatly, I have missplaced that modeline (i use 1680x1050)
But if you use nvidia drivers, then look in the nvidia readme and it should be there, search for modeline 1400x1050

something like this in your monitor section in xorg.conf:

LOL... for some reason, my xorg.conf is a horrible, unreadable mess. But since I just installed ATI's drivers (using the ATI driver installer), do I have to run hwd -e and hwd -xa again to make a new xorg.conf?

'cuz I know you can just select 1400x1050 within xfce's config utility... it just doesn't work properly atm

btw - i'm off to bed. This is fun, but I'm reaaaaaally tired wink 'nite, all...

that's allright, I got it to work. still, I think xorg.conf is completely spammed with useless info wink will have to write my own some day. But for now, all is looking fine and dandy wink

How can you check whether you are running the correct ati drivers or just the framebuffer?

and, by the way, CyberTron...  I have looked at Enlightenment and find it even prettier than xfce4... I'm seriously tempted!

ahh enlightenment is very nice, and compared to xfce4 it is lightningfast...it does not come with any "start"-menues, but you may easily import such things from ex. xfce4 or gnome..

If you are really bold, you go for e17 (which is very very nice ) although it is quite hard to configure, but ones that is done it is really good...(but the problem with e17 is that it is only availible through cvs (and aur/community/nickm packages) since it still is being developed)

well,, I have looked through the config, but I do not find anything that doesn't say that hardwareaccelerated 3d should be availible, the correct drivers seems to be there and so on..

basicly it looks quite fine
