Until yesterday it worked, and now it just dies as you see above. I'm guessing a jdk upgrade broke it...
Any suggestions how I can debug or fix it?

Turns out it was "jre and openjdk6 are in conflict" and removing openjdk6 and all dependencies and then re installing worked, as per https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=710938
