Once gdm loads, I cannot ctrl+alt+Fx to get a tty. I just get a black screen where my logon screen used to be. I dunno what has changed on this system. I installed xfce4 to play with a bit but that is the only recent change. If I boot into mode 3 everything is fine until I load up X via xinitrc. This causes the same behavior (black screen when I hit ctrl+alt+Fx). Thoughts are appreciated!

Any errors in the logs? What's your graphics card?
Can you go back to tty1 or is it black too? If you kill X can you see other ttys or do you have to reboot?

@k - no errors in logs. Card is an nvidia 8800gs. If I got back to tty1 it's black. Same is try for any other tty. If I kill X I can't see anything without a reboot. Very annoying

I recall same thing happening to me once, but I don't (yet) remember how I fixed it.
You may want to try the other driver for your card to see if it's working.

I tried both nvidia from [testing] and from [extra] with no change. Any idea which log I can look at? dmesg.log gives nothing; Xorg.log looks just fine.

I meant nouveau :-)
You know that nvidia drivers don't use KMS and there will be a couple seconds black screen before you get to the tty, right?

@karol - yeah, but the blackness is forever.

OK.. nouveau works fine but 3d performance is unacceptable with nouveau-dri for my system (and gnome-shell requires it). Even dragging the mouse across the desktop gets laggy at times

Could this be a problem with the framebuffer? I'm using grub2 to boot. What framebuffer would folks recommend I try?
