[SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

This is my first post, so; hello to everyone!! Thx in advance to this great community!!

My problem is pretty strange and anoying. I have an nVidia 8600GT in a Abit AX78 MB running Arch with KDE. Anything is going right until logon process. I write the user and password in KDM screen and then, after de animation of init proces of KDE, all graphics displayed are corrupted (a rectangle in the upper left corner is showed) and that's it. Only work the mouse pointer.

This malfunction its showed by the nouveau driver AND the proprietary driver... So i think the problem is it in other place than the driver of the card.

The Xorg.0.log and dmesg.log files are atached at the end of this thread.

I hope that annyone can help me.
Thx in advance again.

The Xorg.0.log file contains this:

I don't quite get what you mean, a screenshot or photo would be helpful.

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

Try pressing Alt+Shift+F12 to disable kwin compositing as this can be a problem on some nvidia cards.

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

karol: Its very simple, all screen is black, except for the mouse pointer and a little rectangle in the upper left corner with graphic garbage on it.

George: Compositing is disabled in 2 places: kwinrc and xorg.conf. Pressing alt+shift+f12 does nothing.

The monitor is CRT, but i have an LCD with VGA port only. I'll try change the screen and see what happend.

As i say in another post, the composite is disabled in 2 configuration files: "/home/user/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc" and "/etc/xorg.conf". I'll check the "~/.xsession-errors" file and write its contents as soon is posible.

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

No idea. They say in suse forum (http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get- … gging.html) to try booting in failsafe mode.

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

mkkot; for that to be of any use to an Arch system you'd need to know what SUSE disables in failsafe mode, I'd guess the relevent part would be if they use vesa xorg drivers insead of nvidia ones.

Fuentes; have you tried your system with the nouveau driver insead of nvidia?

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

mkkot;
Ah yes, I came back to this thread after a leaving it for a while and didn't re-read it completely...

Anyway I'd be inclined to try booting a live cd of a different distro which ships KDE 4.7 (say a kubuntu daily build) and see if that also has that problem.
Also since this fails after KDM how about trying a new user to see if its a config problem.

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

Same problem here with kde 4.7 newly installed,rm -rf .kde4 doesn't help.
But if I get the previous .kde4 back(kde4.6),everything seems fine.

Today I tried it again, last time i just installed kdebase, today I installed kde completely, then everything works fine.

Very interesting. I'll try install whole KDE this time... It seems an Arch bug rather than KDE, is it???

Very thx to all of you!!

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

today i tried the Kubuntu live CD, and all run like a charm!! Now I'll try the complete installation of KDE in Arch. If this works, the only explanation is an Arch bug, is it??

Re: [SOLVED?] Problem with nVidia card

Perhaps, it may also be due to bugs that have appeared in later releases than the (k)ubuntu version you tried ships.
